Why UMKC?

The department of philosophy offers students an opportunity to explore a wide range of philosophical questions while developing their skills in reading, writing and critical thinking. Graduates of UMKC’s philosophy program have been admitted to graduate programs at many prestigious institutions, including Harvard, Yale, MIT, the University of California – Berkeley and the
University of Chicago.

Fast Facts

  • The philosophy department offers concentrations in applied ethics, bioethics and the philosophy of science.
  • The department offers tracks of study designed for students planning to pursue graduate work in philosophy or who are in pre-health or pre-law programs.
  • Studying philosophy is excellent preparation for any area in which the ability to think logically and to express such thinking concisely is useful. Philosophy serves as a good major for students who plan to go on to law school or to do graduate work in the social sciences and humanities.

  • Philosophy Circle is a student-lead organization that provides a variety of social and academic events
    throughout the year.
  • Phi Sigma Tau, the national honor society in philosophy, has a chapter at UMKC.
  • The Center for Applied and Professional Ethics (CAPE) sponsors a wide range of educational opportunities in applied ethics.
