UMKC's
Exchange E-Mail server
has an opt-in
option which will allow
you to have suspected
Junk E-Mail placed into
a 'Junk E-Mail' folder
automatically. This is
in addition to external
filtering which is an
opt-out system.
(contact
abuse@umkc.edu to
opt-out of the external
filtering system.)
It is
recommended that you use
the Outlook Web Access
method for filtering
your email
automatically.
If you
would like to use this
feature via Outlook Web
Access, here are the
steps you may take to
enable it:
-
-
Once logged on,
click on the
'Options' button
in the lower
left-hand
corner.
-
Scroll down to
the section
labeled 'Privacy
and Junk E-mail
Prevention'.
-
Check-mark the
option for
'Filter Junk
E-mail'
-
Optionally:
Click on the
'Manage Junk
E-mail Lists',
and add people
you trust to
your 'Safe
Senders' list.
(never add your
own email
address to this
list.)
If you
use Outlook 2003 on
campus, it can
do filtering for you.
This will only work when
Outlook 2003 is running,
it will not work if you
access email remotely.
If you access email
remotely, you should use
the Outlook Web Access
instructions above.
-
From Outlook, go
to Tools ->
Options
-
Click on the
'Junk E-Mail'
button
-
Select a
filtering level,
generally 'High'
works best, but
'Low' can also
be selected.
-
If you have
email getting
filtered that
should not get
filtered, click
on the 'Safe
Senders' tab,
and enter the
email address of
the person who
you consider
safe. (Note
anyone already
in your
'Contacts'
folder will be
considered
'Safe'.)
-
Click OK to save
your settings,
and OK to close
the options
window.
-
Regularly check
your 'Junk
E-Mail' folder
for content that
may have been
incorrectly
marked as Junk
E-Mail.
-
If you find real
email marked as
Junk E-Mail,
right-click on
the message,
select 'Junk
E-Mail' and
select 'Add
Sender to Safe
Senders List'.
Once
enabled, you should
periodically check your
'Junk E-mail' folder to
make sure that important
email is not incorrectly
being moved.
If you
find real e-mail
messages that are being
moved, go back to the
Junk E-mail settings as
indicated above, and add
the people you trust to
your 'Safe Senders'
list.
Email
sent from inside of
Exchange will never be
marked as Junk E-Mail.
Only email that
originates from the
Internet will be scanned
to see if it is
potentially Junk E-Mail.
The
Exchange servers are
configured to
automatically empty
items in the 'Junk
E-Mail' folder that are
over 30 days old.
Make sure
you do not give out your
email address to web
sites you do not trust.
This is one method that
will result in your
e-mail address getting
on to Spam lists. Also
be careful about
publishing your email
address on web pages, as
this is another method
of gathering email
addresses for spam
lists.
