3:00 PM Jean Braun called the meeting to order.

Faculty Senate Committee Reports:
Academic Issues: No report.
Administrative Issues: Barbara Glesner-Fines reported that a draft Faculty Senate Survey on Faculty Leaves was completed and she distributed the draft to the Senate. Several Senators volunteered to gather information from their units on how many leaves were taken in 1996 and the types of leaves granted. The draft survey will have several suggestions made by Senators incorporated into it. It was noted that some units have to obtain outside support for leaves and other units have an administrative leave available for untenured faculty.
Chancellor’s Memorandum 77: Review of Tenured Faculty. This memorandum will be discussed at the next Senate meeting. Senate officers will distribute the 1995 (second memorandum) which replaced the 1993 memorandum. It has consequences involving tenure. To obtain tenure, faculty members frequently take leaves in order to prepare a tenure folder. This memorandum may compromise the ability of nontenured faculty to be awarded leaves in order to obtain and keep tenure.
4:00 Discussion with the Chancellor:
Strategic Planning: UKC Trustees continued involvement: program evaluation. The UKC Trustees are excited about working on a new five year plan and be involved in the process at the unit level once again. All of the five year plans were given to Dr. Marvin Querry and the Chancellor is now busy compiling each unit’s plan into the overall campus plan. It is the intent of the Chancellor to continue the review of programs in order to keep the new five year plan on track. The planning process is somewhat complicated by the fact that we are working with an interim President.
The Chancellor thought that the amount of leaves reported as granted to UMKC in 1996 seemed low (about 1%). She was not sure how the information was gathered and was glad to hear that the Faculty Senate is investigating this activity. Leave information should be available on PAF’s and Faculty Activity Reports.
