Environmental Health and Safety

Emergency

These procedures are provided for emergency circumstances. For each event listed please remain calm and follow the indicated steps.

Fire

  1. Set off fire alarm
  2. Find a safe location
  3. Call the UMKC Police Dispatch 816-235-1515
  4. Provide the nature and location of the fire
  5. Evacuate the building and assist handicapped individuals
  6. Use a fire extinguisher, if feasible
  7. Notify EHS 816-235-5241
  8. Notify Campus Facilities 816-235-1354
  9. Report to your building liaison at prearranged location

Medical Emergency

If the individual is conscious or unconscious:

  1. Call UMKC Police Dispatch at 816-235-1515, who will call for ambulance service if requested by the individual
  2. Contact Risk Management/Worker’s Compensation at 816-235-5357
  3. Do not move the individual unless authorized by a medical authority, or it is obvious that delay in movement would be detrimental to the individual
  4. Notify appropriate supervisors

Chemical or Biological Release

  1. Evacuate the area to the extent appropriate
  2. Warn fellow workers and supervisors
  3. Call UMKC Police Dispatch at 816-235-1515
  4. Take action to contain the spill if it is possible to do so without jeopardizing personal safety or health
  5. If the spill is of disastrous proportions immediately contact EHS at 816-235-5241, to call the state or national emergency response numbers

Tornado

  1. If indoors, move away from windows and into the basement or interior hallway on a lower floor. Avoid auditoriums, gymnasiums or other areas having a wide, free-span roof
  2. Warn fellow workers and supervisors
  3. Take cover under heavy furniture
  4. If outdoors, lie flat in the nearest depression, such as a ditch or ravine
  5. If there is time, move away from the path of the tornado at a right angle

Radiation

Release of Radioactive Materials:

  1. Evacuate personnel from radiation contaminated area
  2. Assemble all personnel in nearby safe area until radiation surveys and personnel decontamination are performed by the EHS Radiation Safety Office
  3. Prevent the spread of contamination from the site
  4. Use nearest telephone for communication and avoid walking through buildings
  5. Close off doors, windows and, if possible, turn off HVAC to reduce radiation contamination throughout the building
  6. Control access to radiation area and post warning signs indicating radiation and contamination hazards
  7. Contact EHS Radiation Safety Office at 816-235-5289 or 816-235-1844
  8. Decontamination of rooms and buildings shall only be done under EHS Radiation Safety Office supervision
Fire involving radiation:

  5. Evacuate the building and assist handicapped individuals
  6. Use a fire extinguisher, if feasible

  8. Notify Campus Facilities 816-235-1354
  9. Report to your building liaison at prearranged location

Medical emergency involving radiation:

If the individual is conscious or unconscious:

  1. Call UMKC Police Dispatch at 816-235-1515, who will call for ambulance service if requested by the individual
  2. Ensure that UMKC Police and Medical personnel are informed of the potential for a radiation hazard
  3. Contact Risk Management/Worker’s Compensation at 816-235-5357
  4. Do not move the individual unless authorized by a medical authority, or it is obvious that delay in movement would be detrimental to the individual
  5. Notify appropriate supervisors
  6. Contact EHS Radiation Safety Office at 816-235-5289 or 816-235-1844

Earthquake

  1. Stay indoors if already there
  2. Take cover under sturdy furniture, such as worktables or desks; or in doorways, halls or against inside walls
  3. Stay near the center of the building
  4. Stay away from glass windows or doors
  5. Avoid running through or near buildings where there is the danger of falling debris
  6. Persons outdoors should stay in the open, away from buildings and structures and a safe distance from utility wires
  7. After tremors have stopped, stay away from damaged buildings and structures
