Student Involvement

Commuter Student Resources and Activities

As a commuter student, you are an important part of a large and diverse group of students here at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. At UMKC, commuter students are defined as students who drive to campus on a daily basis. These students are enrolled in courses on campus, but do not live in the residence halls, Oak Place Apartments, or on any college-owned property. Many commuter students live with their families and juggle college, family, and employment obligations. The commuter population consists of both traditional students and nontraditional adult learners over the age 17.

UMKC is your university and has much to offer during your collegiate years, but as a commuter student it will require some extra effort on your part. Getting involved on campus by joining a student organization, attending events sponsored by various academic or student affairs offices, participating in intramurals, and working on campus are some ways to enhance your out-of-classroom engagement and improve your overall experience.

The Office of Student Involvement works hard to ensure that both our residential and commuter students are connected to campus through resources and activities. The Office of Student Involvement delivers programming and services to you that will encourage an active and educational environment. Below are just some of the many exciting activities that we have aimed at our commuter student population.

Good Morning Roos

Good Morning Roos is an event sponsored by the Activity and Program Council. At this event, tables are set up at various parking garages where breakfast bags are passed out to students as they arrive on campus. In addition to breakfast goodies, they are also provided with a list of activities that are happening on campus that month. APC also provides additional programming specific to commuter students such as Winterize Your Car and the Commuter Student Involvement Fair. Student Organizations

Many commuter students are very active in the extra-curricular activities here at UMKC. With approximately 200 active student organizations on campus, there are a variety of leadership opportunities that are available to you. Everything from academic, social, political, religious and more – there is something for everyone at UMKC. In addition, there are specific student organizations aimed at non-traditional students.
