The Center for Academic Development (CAD) provides support services that help students achieve their academic goals. This center is the home to Supplemental Instruction (SI) which was developed at UMKC in 1973. SI is a peer-assisted study model that improves student learning, grades, and retention rates. Video-based SI is a learning approach which combines the use of video technology and a skilled facilitator to provide learners with an opportunity to master difficult course content, as well as develop complex reasoning skills. The Coaching Program strives to provide students with the skills necessary for their journey at UMKC by assisting them in becoming engaged with the university community and promoting life-long learning through critical thinking and social awareness. The program offers one-on-one peer interaction, academic assistance, and personal and social support. The CAD also houses the Math and Science Resource Center, a free tutoring service for all UMKC students.
