Q: Can I use the UMKC logo or the UM-System seal on my Web site?
A: In general, the answer is no. We discourage the use of the UMKC logo and
UM-System identities. Why? Once included on a Web site, it is impossible
to control their use. (The UM Seal is designated only to be used
for specific kinds of official communications.) They get copied and used on sites for which they
were never intended. They also show up in printed materials. If the
size needs to be changed, they are often simply stretched and contorted.
If they need to go on a different color background, they are simply dropped
in with a haze around them from the background they were originally designed
to be used on. If enlarged, the low resolution graphics from a web page get
grainy. Very poor quality low resolution web graphics have even shown up on
letterhead.
The only acceptable use of the UMKC logo (except for publications electronic
or otherwise, done through the office of
University Communications) is as a small link back to the
main UMKC Web site. (See the online Graphics
Standards Manual for more complete information about the use of the
UMKC identity.) An individual academic or administrative department
can use their own logo on their Web site if they wish. Be advised that
this will allow individuals to make "official" Web sites and letterhead -- often
of dubious quality -- that appear to represent your department. It is
recommended that the only way you use your logo is very small as a link back to
your department's main web page. Smaller graphics are much less useful to
those who might copy them.
If you do decide that you need a logo for a Web site, PLEASE ask
that one be made for you. Send the specifics of what you want to
the e-mail address below and we'll send you what you need. Please
include the size you want the logo (in pixels-high by pixels-wide)
and the color background it will be used on. The UMKC logos
are especially hard to reproduce with acceptable quality unless
you know what color background they are going to be used on. There
is no charge for the creation of electronic versions of the logo for
any approved use.
