How is information organized?
The main page is broken down into eight main sections with
help and find buttons as well as an alphabetical index at the bottom
of every page. For the most part, the pictures at the top of every
page are buttons that will normally take you somewhere. Every
subsidiary page (like this one) will have links back to UMKC and to
the Admissions Web sites at the top.
Each page also has links to the text-only version of the UMKC
Web site as well as links to the University of Missouri System
Web site with modification dates for the current document and
the "Web News" page.
Here's a brief synopsis of what's under each of the sections:
- Admissions
-
- Primarily, this contains information of interest to potential
students: undergraduate and graduate admissions procedures,
degree programs, course descripts, housing, student life,...
- Students
-
-
This is intended to provide information useful to currently
enrolled students: academic calendar, exam schedules, class
schedules, student life, student services, registration and
records, student handbook,...
- Academics
-
-
Links to all academic divisions. And, just in case, links
to the class schedules and the online calendar.
- Alumni & Athletics
-
-
Information of interest to our alumni:
Intercollegiate athletics, alumni and constituent relations,
alumni online community, continuing education,...
- News & Events
-
-
Newsletters; press releases; student newspaper; special
events calendar, sports schedules,...
- Community
-
- Events; art and entertainment; continuing education;
job postings; local, regional and state government links of interest,...
- Employees
-
-
Information that would primarily be useful to employees.
Human resources for both UMKC and the UM-System; MIS
applications links; staff assembly and faculty senate
links; UMKC and UM-System newsletters; UM-System employee
directory search,...
- Computing
-
-
Network status; links to computing related organizations
across campus; information about dialup access,...
- Find
-
-
This selection contains an alphabetical index (just like
the one at the bottom of every main page), and simple
front-ends to the UM-System student and employee directories.
Along with search hints. Ultimately, it will probably have
links to search through the online catalog and other future
search features.
- Help
-
-
Well, if you are reading this, you've probably figured out
what this one does.
- Index
-
-
A quick way to get to anything whether it is a department
name or a topic. Want to know where the Web site is for
the Art department in the College of Arts and Sciences? You
can find it under "A". Want to know where the Web site
is for Intercollegiate Athletics is? It's under "I" for
intercollegiate. Under "A" for athletics, intercollegiate.
And, it's under "S" for sports.
What's the quickest way to find what I'm looking for?
Use the index. If you can't find what you want in the
index, it probably doesn't exist (and in that case,
click on the e-mail address below and tell us what
you are looking for and we'll find it for you). Everything that is under the
main selections is (or should be) under the index as well.
So, once you know it exists, the quickest way to get there is
with the index.
If you are sure that a site exists but isn't in the
index, let bytes@umkc.edu know
so that the index can be updated.
What's with the pictures? How many are there?
When the main page comes up, it will present one of
19 "feature" pages more or less randomly. All of the
feature pages have the same main selections, they
simply have a different featured site in the middle.
Each academic division at UMKC is featured as well as
other organizations affiliated with UMKC. You can
flip through all 19 sites by clicking the little yellow
arrows underneath the pictures. You can visit the
featured site by clicking on the picture in the center
or the URL underneath the picture.
Some of the featured sites, have more than one possible
picture. For instance, there are 14 possible pictures
for Intercollegiate Athletics. You have a one in 19 chance
of getting Athletics, and a one in 14 chance of any specific
athletics image. Academic units and departments that want
more than the one picture should contact University Communications
at the e-mail address below.
Departments that have a featured site can use their specific
feature page as the initial page that comes up when they start
their web browser.
As for how many, there are a lot.
Why's the screen so narrow?
The number one reason is that everyone doesn't have a
800x600 monitor. Some don't even have a 640x480 monitor.
The site is designed to be usable by a screen as small
as 480x320.
Why's does the screen "blink"?
This only appears to happen when using versions of Netscape
prior to version 4.5 on both PCs and Macs. Every other page
you view appears to reload or blink. Once the page is
cached, it does not blink. It does not appear to hurt anything.
It does not happen with version 4.x of Microsoft Internet Explorer,
with the browser incorporated into AOL version 3 and 4, or with
Netscape version 4.5. Best guess as to what causes it? It might
be due to the complexity of the single <TABLE> representation
or the number of images per page.
