Community Spaces
Facilities/Services
A vending area and ice machine are located in the basement and/or various floors throughout each building. There are also lounge areas, recreation areas and study areas. Color televisions with cable are located in the lounge and recreation areas.
Pianos are located in the practice rooms in the basement area of the residence halls. Contact the front desk for a key.
Two computer labs, located on the first floor of Johnson Hall and on the fourth floor of Oak Street Hall, are open to all residence hall students. They contain computers which are networked with the UMKC network. The labs are open 24 hours per day.
Other services include checkout items available at each residence hall front desk. These include sports equipment, games and limited cleaning supplies. They may be checked out by leaving your student ID with the attendant on duty at the desk.
Lounges
Lounges are for the exclusive use of residents and their guests. Lounges are not to be used for group meetings other than those sanctioned by the Residential Housing Council or Residential Life staff. The classroom and lounge schedules for both Oak Street and Johnson Halls are administered by the Residential Life Coordinator. Please contact the Residential Life Coordinator to reserve the lounges or classroom in Oak Street at 235-8719 and in Johnson at 235-8832.
Laundry Room
Coin- and card-operated automatic washers and dryers are located on the lower level of each residence hall and can be used by residents. Residents may use their student IDs in washers and dryers by loading them with Roo Bucks. Due to the limited number of washers and dryers, non-residents may not use these facilities.
Vending Machines
Complete vending areas are located in each residence hall, with a wide selection of snack items. Refunds for vending items not received from the vending machines in the residence halls can be obtained from the Food Service Office in the University Center (816-235-1417).
Furniture and Equipment
All common-area furniture and equipment is University property. Removal of such is considered theft and is subject to disciplinary action under the UMKC Residential Life Judicial Procedures, in addition to the general Standard of Conduct for students. Common area furniture found in student rooms will be removed by building staff, and each resident of the room is subject to an administrative fee for each item removed. The fee will be determined by the amount of administrative activity involved with the disposition of the theft and will be no less than $30 per student involved.
Oak Place Apartments
Common Areas/Recreational Facilities
Your community has a number of common/recreational areas designated for resident use. Some are equipped with a television or other devices for resident enjoyment. Residents are asked to be considerate of each other while watching television and using the common area/recreational facilities. Residents and guests must comply with all rules and regulations regarding these facilities. Residential Life reserves the right at any time to restrict and/or control these common areas/recreational facilities as determined to be necessary for the care and cleanliness of the community and for the preservation of good order, comfort and benefit of residents in general and for the efficient operation of the community. In all of the community spaces, the following policies apply:
- In case of emergency, dial 911.
- No alcoholic beverages or smoking allowed. No glass containers allowed.
- No wet clothing permitted.
- Hours are determined by Residential Life and will be posted outside the main entrance to any of the community spaces.
- Residents must provide drivers license or University ID in order to check out billiard or other equipment from the front desk. All items must be returned in good condition before ID is returned.
- Use the facility at your own risk. Use the equipment only in the manner intended by the manufacturer.
- Handle equipment with care. Do not remove or damage equipment and supplies.
- Guests must be accompanied by a resident. No more than two guests per resident.
- No fighting, dangerous conduct, or noise which disturbs others. Respect others by keeping noise to a minimum and by disposing of trash properly.
- Do not leave personal items in these areas. Residential Life is not responsible for any lost stolen, or damaged items.
- Violation of any or all of the above stated rules or rules for specific community spaces may result in termination of resident use of these spaces or other action.
Fitness Room
The fitness room is provided for the enjoyment of all residents. In addition to the general community space policies, the following policies also apply to the fitness room:
- Children under the age of 12 are not permitted in the fitness room, unless accompanied by a parent.
- Attendants are not provided. Use of the fitness room is at your own risk. Residential Life is not responsible for accidents or injuries.
- Pets are not allowed. No food allowed. Drinks are permitted in plastic containers.
- Please use headphones when listening to music.
- Rubber-soled shoes required.
- Do not make repairs on fitness equipment. Please report needed repairs immediately to the front desk.
- Do not use, adjust, or operate fitness equipment beyond your physical limitations.
- Do not remove fitness equipment from the fitness room.
- Please wipe down the fitness area.
- Please report vandalism and unauthorized users.
Computer Lab
- In the computer lab(s) provided for the enjoyment of all residents, the following policies apply in addition to the general space policies listed above:
- Documents are to be saved on resident's own CD or jump drive and not on the hard drive. Documents saved on the hard drive will be deleted.
- Residents will be held responsible for any damage to equipment during his/her computer time.
- No food, drink, or smoking allowed in computer labs.
- Screen savers are not to be tampered with at any time.
- No obscene information or material is allowed on the computers at any time for any reason.
- Resident must provide own paper for printing purposes.
- Changing from one computer to another with the same CD or jump drive could spread a virus; therefore, Residential Life is not responsible for any virus infection.
