Electrical Appliances
Because each room is furnished with a MicroFridge unit, additional microwaves and refrigerators are not permitted in the residence halls. Other appliances that may cause a fire or safety hazard may not be used in student rooms. These include: hot-surface appliances such as hot plates, space heaters, popcorn poppers, immersion coils, toasters, toaster ovens, coffee makers, George Foreman grills and any other cooking appliances. Such items brought into the residence hall will be confiscated and stored during the resident's stay. Questions regarding permitted appliances can be directed to the Residential Life Coordinators.
Oak Place Apartments
Extension cords and Multiple Plugs
An extension cord must be UL approved, 16 gauges and not exceed an unspliced length of six feet with a polarized plug and a single outlet; it may not be placed under floor coverings or furnishings and may not be secured by penetrating the insulation.
Open Flames/Items which Produce Heat
Items which require an open flame to operate or which produce heat (e.g., Bunsen burners, lighted candles, alcohol burners, George Foreman grills) are not allowed.
Light Bulbs
The residents will be responsible at their expense to replace all interior bulbs and tubes. All bulbs and tubes must be operational at the time the resident vacates the premises or a charge will be assessed to replace them. Halogen light bulbs must be supervised by resident during the use and must never be left on unattended.
Satellite Dishes and Antenna
No antenna or satellite dish is permitted.
Musical Instruments, Radios, Televisions, Electronics
Musical instruments and audio/video equipment may be played in your room as long as they do not disturb others. If others are disturbed, the playing of these instruments/equipment must be stopped immediately or turned down and is subject to discipline by the Residential Life Coordinator. Practice rooms are available in the basement of both Oak Street and Johnson Halls for vocal and instrumental practice. You may check the key out at the front desk between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Oak Place Apartments
In Oak Place Apartments, all radios, television sets, stereo equipment, or any other band instruments or items which may cause noise shall be turned town to a level of sound that does not interfere with other residents of the community. No music lessons, either vocal or instrumental, shall be permitted on the premises at any time.
Telephones
Residents who choose to maintain a landline phone in their room may do so at their cost. The cost wil be $50 to install and then $22.50 per month. This would be local phone sesrvice only, and the student would need to arrange to have a calling card for long distance. Rooms do not come provided with a phone. Students wishing to have voice mail may bring their own answering devices.
Calls can be made within the residence halls and on campus by dialing the last four digits of the telephone number. Calls outside the residence hall can be made by dialing "9" and waiting for the dial tone before dialing the number.
Landlines are available in Oak Place Apartments through an outside contractor. Please speak with the Residential Life Business Office if you have questions about installing a phone in your apartment. These phones are not considered to be on-campus.
Unauthorized use of code numbers or credit card numbers to place long-distance telephone calls constitutes a theft of services and is in violation of both state and federal statutes. Penalties for violation include fines and imprisonment (Title 18, Sections 1029 and 1343 of the United States Code).
If you receive a threatening telephone call, please contact the Residential Life Coordinator, student staff member, or Campus Police at extension 1515.
Ethernet/Wireless
Student rooms have Ethernet connections for students to access the campus network/Internet for each occupant. UMKC Computing Services is available to work with students to ensure they bring the proper equipment to be compatible with the network. Information about this process is sent in the summer. Please be sure your computer has an Ethernet card and meets minimum specifications outlined by UMKC's RESNET.
Wireless connections are available in each Residential Life complex and throughout campus.
