Residential Life

Welcome from the Director

Dear Future UMKC Residential Life Student:

Congratulations on your choice to attend UMKC and live on campus! We think you've made an excellent choice, and we hope you are able to experience all the great things that living on campus offers to our students.

Research has shown that over 50% of all learning that takes place at the University occurs outside the classroom. Studies also show that students who live on campus have a higher rate of academic success than those who live off campus. Residential Life at UMKC invites you to participate in the learning experience that it can offer to you when you live in one of the UMKC Residential Life facilities.

Simplify Your Life...Live On Campus

Residential living is offered in three UMKC facilities. In Fall 2009, UMKC opened Johnson Residence Hall, a LEED-certified, suite-style residence hall. The Oak Street Residence Hall opened its doors for the first time in August 2004. Both residence halls provide student suites of two double bedrooms joined by a private bathroom and a host of modern, exciting amenities. Both residence hall options provide you with the convenience of not having to prepare meals, no need to worry about utility bills, being able to walk to classes and the accessibility of campus activities and facilities - especially the new Student Union! Facilities and services in the buildings include meeting and recreation rooms, study areas, individual Ethernet computer access to the campus network and many other amenities.

In Fall 2008, the UMKC campus opened the Oak Place Apartments. The apartments are fully furnished, all utilities paid with your own washer and dryer. As of April 1, UMKC will take over management of the apartments. We think this will provide students with some additional benefits, such as being able to apply their financial aid directly to housing payments, flexible 10-month and 12-month contracts (on 4-bedroom units only) and on-call emergency maintenance. The Apartments have all the benefits of living on campus (i.e. University staff, referral resources, security) with the added benefit of more private living. Generally encouraged for our upper class and graduate-level students, the apartments provide an ideal living place for the older student. Come see what all the excitement is about!

Conveniences are just a small part of the benefits of living on campus. When you live on campus, you have the opportunity to meet and live with a highly diverse group of students from all parts of the country and world. Activities and events are planned by live-in staff at each facility to help you get to know other students, learn new skills, and gain friends and experiences that you will value for the rest of your life.

Now What?

If you haven't already, make sure to submit an online contract for a residence hall or an online contract for the apartments. If you have questions about the facilities or the contracts, you can contact us at (816)235-8840.

We look forward to the opportunity to serve you this year!

Sincerely,
