Minimum Wage
Mandatory minimum wage rates for employees are established by the Fair Labor Standards Act (federal) and Missouri Revised Statutes (state). Employers are required to pay as a minimum rate of pay whichever rate is higher.
Effective July 24, 2007, the minimum wage established under the Fair Labor Standards Act
(FLSA) is $5.85 per hour.
Effective January 1, 2008, the new Missouri minimum wage became $6.65 per hour.
UMKC hourly employees earning less than $6.65 per hour should have had their rate changed effective December 30, 2007,
the first day of the pay period in which January 1, 2008 occurs.
Effective July 24, 2009, the new federal minimum wage is $7.25 per hour. Since
this is more than the current Missouri minimum wage, UMKC is required to pay
hourly employees no less than $7.25 per hour.
The Missouri minimum wage requirements are to be reviewed each fall. Human Resources will notify HRFs when these changes are
coming. Call Jane Allen, senior HR specialist, if you have any questions about the
minimum wage.
Please note that the state and federal laws require the posting of minimum wages in all
buildings. You can find these posters at www.dolir.mo.gov for Missouri, and www.dol.gov/compliance/topics/posters.htm for FLSA.
