Advanced Placement (AP) Courses
Advanced courses for which a College Board Advanced Placement (AP) examination exists that are taught in high schools to eligible high school students who may receive high school and college credit. Provided the student successfully passes the AP exam, college credit is received but no college-level letter grade is awarded. AP courses are credit by exam courses.
The courses are taught on the high school campus by high school teachers approved by the College Board. The College Board is a membership organization. The high school teacher is not required to have a master’s degree but attend the College Board’s professional development workshops and Summer Institutes.
The college a student attends after high school graduation would determine if the AP course would transfer to their institution. Course transferability is not guaranteed. The high school counselor would be able to determine which if any of the high school’s advance courses are considered AP courses.
