Wagner is Honored
Congratulations to Maryfrances Wagner was
recently inducted into the the inaugural class of the new Raytown Quality
Schools Alumni Hall of Fame! The Alumni Hall of Fame was born out of
the district's recent Centennial Celebration and the inaugural class was
honored at a series of events during the weekend of September 23-25.
Previously Mrs. Wagner was given
an Excellence in Teaching Award, was honored as Raytown District's Teacher of
the Year in 1995-96, and that same year was one of five finalists for Missouri Teacher of the
Year. She is a 1965 graduate of Raytown High School and a graduate of the University of
Missouri-Kansas City where she earned both bachelor's and master's
degrees.
Mrs.
Wagner is also known by many as their favorite English teacher at Raytown
High School where she has been teaching students for 35 years, almost as
long as she has been writing her poetry. And in addition to her many
duties and responsibilities as a full-time teacher, she also serves as the
UMKC High School/College Program (dual credit program) English Coordinator,
a position she has held for almost three years.
Still
more know Maryfrances Wagner as an accomplished poet and author. She has published five books, including a tribute
to her father in "Salvatore's Daughter," and has been published in numerous
literary journals and magazines. Her awards are lengthy, among them are the Thorpe Menn
Book Award, the Stanley Hanks Poetry Contest and the Writers Place Award.
Mrs.
Wagner says she practices what she teaches. "I think it's
important for students to take their learning beyond the classroom and find
ways to use their skills and share them with others."
