Conservatory of Music & Dance

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) is an institution with approximately 15,000 students. The Conservatory of Music & Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City provides professional training in music and dance, offering degrees from the bachelor’s through the doctorate. The Conservatory has an enrollment of over 625 students with approximately 40% enrolled in a wide variety of graduate degree programs, including the Master’s and DMA in performance, as well as conducting. The faculty, featuring approximately 50 full-time and 25 part-time talented musicians and dancers, was recently enhanced by five endowed positions. Founded in 1906, the Conservatory has educated outstanding teachers, performers, composers, and scholars. The Conservatory has also been enriched by the Wylliams/Henry Danse Theatre, a professional modern dance company in residence at UMKC. In addition, a large pre-college and continuing education division is maintained through the Conservatory’s Community Music and Dance Academy. In complement to the Conservatory, the City of Kansas City supports a variety of arts organizations, including the Kansas City Ballet, Symphony, Lyric Opera, Chamber Orchestra, and Chorale, as well the New Ear Contemporary Ensemble, and the Friends of Chamber Music. Position Title:  Music Therapy

Responsibilities:  Teach undergraduate and/or graduate coursework in music therapy or related areas depending upon expertise of successful candidate; maintain activity in research and publication; guide graduate and/or undergraduate music therapy majors; advise graduate and/or undergraduate research; supervise music therapy clinical experiences; and participate in faculty committees and other service activities.

Appointment Begins: Fall Semester, 2008

Rank and Salary: Assistant/Associate Professor, tenure track; salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Qualifications:  Doctorate completed by August 2008 preferred; will consider applicants who are ABD by June 2008.  Five years of full time successful clinical experience beyond internship (or the part-time equivalent); demonstrated ability in research and potential for continued productivity.  Must meet the requirements for Academic Faculty as stipulated in the AMTA Standards for Education and Clinical Training for Graduate Faculty. Music Therapy Board Certification required.

Program Description:  Since 1973, the UMKC Conservatory Music Therapy Program has been a dynamic and respected program with well established     interdisciplinary ties on campus and in the community.  The music therapy program is one of three Conservatory programs selected by UMKC for enhancement, in terms of funding and resources, for the purpose of bringing the program to national       prominence.  The program currently offers degree programs for students studying at the undergraduate and graduate levels.  Doctoral training is available for students through the Interdisciplinary PhD program, affording students the unique opportunity to pursue advanced studies in two areas of concentration.  This position would fill a third faculty position in our music    therapy program.  Our position in the greater Kansas City Metropolitan area has enabled us to establish relationships with more than twenty professional music therapists and close to eighty community agencies, resulting in a wealth of clinical training and research opportunities for our students and faculty.  The Conservatory and Provost’s Office support the growth of our program through clinical training and professional development experiences.

Position Title:  Modern Dance

Responsibilities:  Teach all levels of modern dance technique, one level of   composition, contemporary dance history or dance criticism and aesthetics and create original choreography as well as direct one Conservatory dance concert annually.  Contribute to the performance, academic and service environments characteristic of a Conservatory within a university, while enriching the cultural environment of the Kansas City metropolitan community.

Appointment Begins:  Fall Semester, 2008

Rank and Salary:  Assistant Professor, tenure-track.  Salary competitive and commensurate with experience

Qualifications:  MFA degree and/or substantial professional experience.  Specialization in an established modern technique (Horton, Graham or Limon preferred) with an expertise in at least one of the following: improvisation, labanotation, or world dance forms.  Artistic achievement, administrative leadership and administrative abilities preferred.

The Dance DivisionThe Dance Division is one of 6 UMKC Conservatory Departments.  It features 5 full-time and 3 part-time instructors.  The Dance Division offers a BFA in performance and choreography with an equal emphasis in ballet and modern.  The program is committed to training highly competitive dancers and providing a strong educational background in choreography and pedagogy.  The unit has approximately 80 dance majors and has experienced a dramatic growth in enrollment as a result of liaisons with high schools, dance schools and professional training institutions across the nation.
