School of Education

The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), one of four University of Missouri campuses, is a public university serving more than 14,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UMKC engages with the community and economy based on a three-part mission: visual and performing arts, health sciences, and urban affairs.

The School of Education at UMKC has been NCATE-accredited since 1961 and serves as Kansas City’s research intensive school of education and partner to the metropolitan area’s school districts.  The School boasts an engaged and highly diverse faculty where over one-third of the faculty members are persons of color and the School is highly committed to continue building on that success.  In 2004, the School of Education and the College of Arts and Sciences launched the Institute for Urban Education, a four-year undergraduate program that develops elementary and middle-school teachers focusing on teaching math, science and literacy for local urban schools.  This initiative has garnered wide-spread community support and funding, and is intended to serve as a national model for urban teacher preparation.

The School of Education is a dynamic, growing school with a long and distinguished history of preparing educators, administrators and counselors for schools, colleges and human service organizations. UMKC is located in the cultural and artistic heart of Kansas City and is committed to its mission as an urban land-grant university.
