This person will conduct biomedical research within the Department of Surgery and the UMKC Shock Trauma Research Center.
Specific Responsibility:
1. Supervise activities in the Laboratory of Hemorrhagic Shock. This includes coordination of the activities of technologists, post-doctoral workers, surgical residents and students towards the research goals established by the principal investigator and by the Director of the UMKC Shock Trauma Research Center (“the Center”).
2. Carry out specific research projects both individually in the Laboratory of Hemorrhagic shock, and in collaboration with others in the Center. This includes the work currently being done using an animal model of hemorrhagic shock.
3. Seek grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and other sources of funding to support research in the Center.
4. Prepare publications of work which has been or is being done in the Center.
5. Prepare and participate in presentations at regional and national meetings, relating to the work of the Center, including both oral and poster presentations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This individual must possess a PhD in a Biomedical Science or an MD. He or she must have at least five (5) years of experience in carrying out biomedical research and must have written a substantial number of publications relating to previously done research. The individual must possess a broad range of skills in the techniques of molecular biology and have experience with microbiology. Experience in animal research, including surgical preparations, is essential. Experience in cell culture work is desirable. Position Title:
Position Description: Docents participate in the UMKC School of Medicine Fundamentals of Medical Practice series where Year 1 and 2 students participate in physicians’ clinics and hospital units to learn professional values while taking basic medical histories from real patients. Students will interview patients and discuss the interviews with the Docent. Through these interactions the Docent gets to teach students how to talk with patients about medical matters. Along the way, they get to teach students about professional qualities as well, like altruism; humanism; honor and integrity; accountability; excellence and duty. Specific duties include:
The Docent meets weekly for two hours with one group of students for two years (60 hours total per year, usually on Tuesday or Thursday morning).
Meetings should occur during the fall and winter semesters—30 weeks total per year (there are NO meetings during summer, Christmas and spring breaks).
The Docent is assigned a student group consisting of 10-12 students.
The Docent is expected to give individual attention to students who are struggling academically or personally, usually around 3-5 hours per year (e.g. talking with them for a few minutes after the formal meeting, attending an evaluation council meeting, etc.)
The Docent will complete and online student performance evaluation for each student each semester (1-2 hrs per semester).
The Docent will attend a 2 hour orientation to program every other year (this orientation is scheduled at the beginning of each two-year cycle).

Position Description: Saint Luke's Hospital and the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine seek qualified candidates to occupy the position of the Paul G. Koontz, Jr./Missouri Endowed Chair in Breast Disease. The position was established in 1999. Its fulfillment is critical to the development of the Saint Luke's Hospital Breast Center and will be a major positive force within The Cancer Institute at Saint Luke's Hospital and within the University.
The Chair will have an academic appointment within the Department of Surgery, and will be a principal liaison between Saint Luke's Hospital and Truman Medical Center, especially in the area of breast diseases and breast cancer.
