The Instructional Design Department at UMKC is available to assist faculty in all aspects of online teaching, course development and update of current online courses. Instructional Design staff teach several different workshops aimed at both the pedagogical aspects of online teaching as well as current theory in instructional design. Staff of this department are also responsible for certifying online courses and programs to ensure that they meet the UMKC standards for excellence in online teaching. The Instructional Design Department:
  1. Provides professional development to faculty groups who desire a greater understanding of pedagogical approaches to teaching online and for best practice in online course design .
  2. Provides Blackboard and Moodle course building workshops, course development assistance, and course design services to online programs offered by UMKC.
  3. Assists faculty with assessment and evolution of web-based technology in their courses.

Faculty Certification Course in Online Teaching and Learning

When: Choose from three Summer/Fall 2012 course offerings: June 4th - June 29th; July 23rd - August 17th, OR October 22nd - November 16th
What: Four Week Experience
Where: Entirely Online with one synchronous Wimba session for one hour
Why: Completion Results in Certification in Online Teaching and Learning

Prerequisites: Adequate typing skills and point and click confidence with the Internet.

Would you like to gain Certification in Teaching and Learning Online? Hone your skills as an online facilitator by registering for the Faculty Certification Course.

This course is a four week online experience which is made up of discussions, creations of products, and use of tools which will facilitate your online teaching. Whether you are a veteran online instructor, or a person interested in teaching online, this course will meet your needs. You will explore pedagogy concerning quality online teaching and learning practices. In addition, you will gain experience in using Wikis, Blogs, Wimba and Discussion Boards.

You will participate in a group project to create a unit of instruction for online delivery. This three week course will allow you to try out tools for online course instruction, and determine, from a learner point of view, which of these tools will assist you in your learning experience.

This course is limited to 24 participants.


Build Your Online Course Workshop Series

When: Three dates to choose from: 

June 19, 21, 26 and 28 from 9am-noon

August 6, 8, 13, 15 from noon – 3pm

December 3, 5, 10, 12 from 9am-noon


What: Four half-day, hands on sessions
Where: face to face, Fine Arts 307
Why: This will assist you in building an online course that will meet UMKC certification standards

Prerequisites: Bring your syllabus and course materials

This series of four half-day workshops is designed to walk you through the steps necessary to de-sign your online course so that it meets the UMKC online certification criteria.

Each of the following half day sessions are intended to define the UMKC online course certification standards as well as to show examples of the tools that might best enable achievement of those standards. Each day, the workshop will begin with an overview of the standard being addressed and then a demonstration of some of the tools that might support accomplishment of that standard.

Participants will have time during each session to use the tools to begin building their course with-in a supported, hands-on environment.
