Assignments


Create an Individual Assignment | PDF

Follow these directions to create a Blackboard Assignment where students will individually upload/submit their assignments.

  1. From the content area, hover the cursor over Create Assessment.
  2. Click Assignment.
  3. Enter the following information on the assignment page:
    • Section 1: Assignment Information
      Only the Name is required.
    • Section 2: Assignment Files
      Click Browse My Computer to upload files relevant to the assignment (ie. documents with detailed instructions, tables to fill out, rubrics, etc.).
    • Section 3: Grading
      Enter the number of points the assignment is worth.
    • Section 4: Availability
      • Make the Assignment Available: This box must be checked to make the assignment available to students.
      • Number of Attempts: Select how many times students can submit assignment attempts. NOTE: Each submission can be commented on and graded individually.
      • Limit Availability: Set the assignment to be available after a certain date/time, until a specific date/time or both.
    • Section 5: Due Date
      Submissions will be allowed after the due date, but will be marked late. The due date will also be used for the Early Warning System and Notification Dashboard features within the course.
    • Section 6: Recipients
      Select All Students Individually to provide the assignment to each student enrolled in the course.
  4. Click Submit.

Create a Group Assignment

NOTE: Groups must already be created in your Blackboard coruse site before you are allowed to create a group assignment. Learn how to create groups.

  1. From the content area, hover the cursor over Create Assessment.
  2. Click Assignment.
  3. Enter the following information on the assignment page:
    • Section 1: Assignment Information
      Only the Name is required.
    • Section 2: Assignment Files
      You can upload files relevant to the assignment (ie. documents with detailed instructions, tables to fill out, rubrics, etc.).
    • Section 3: Grading
      Enter the number of points the assignment is worth.
    • Section 4: Availability
      • Make the Assignment Available This box must be checked to make the assignment available to students.
      • Number of Attempts Select how many times students can submit assignment attempts.
        NOTE: Each submission can be commented on and graded individually
      • Limit Availability Set the assignment to be available after a certain date/time, until a specific date/time or both.
  4. Section 6: Recipients
    Select Groups of Students
    NOTE: Groups must already be created in your Blackboard course site before you are allowed to create a group assignment.
  5. Click the group name or Ctrl+click multiple group names to select them.
  6. Click the right-pointing arrow between the two windows. The selected groups will be moved to the Selected Items window.
  7. Click Submit.

Download Assignment Files

Note: Downloading the assignments will only download the file(s) from each student's most recent submission. If the student added information to the Submission or Comment fields, that will be included in a text file named "Assignment_Title_Username."

  1. Click Grade Center in the Control Panel.
  2. In the column header for the assignment, click the dropdown chevron to the right of the assignment title.
  3. Click Assignment File Download.
  4. Select specific student files by clicking the checkbox to the left of their name OR click the checkbox in the column header to select all student files.
  5. Click Submit.
  6. Click Download Assignments Now.
  7. When the window pops up, you can save the zipped file or open it to save each document. If you chose:
    • Open: A window will open showing each document submitted as well as a notepad file for each document. You can open and save each individual document.
    • Save: You can save the zip file to your computer. To access the saved documents, open the zip file from your computer.
  8. Click OK to return to the grade center.

View or Download Student Assignments Individually | PDF

View, download and/or grade one student's submission at a time.

  1. Click Grade Center in the Control Panel.
  2. In the expanded menu that appears, click Needs Grading.
  3. In the cell that corresponds with the student's assignment, click the dropdown chevron.
  4. Click Grade All Users or Grade Anonymously.
  5. From this page, you can:
    • View the Submission History.
    • View information entered by the student into the Submission and Comment fields for the attempt.
    • Click the title of any attached files to view or download them.
    • Enter a grade for the attempt.
    • Enter comments or feedback for the student in the Comments section under Grade Current Attempt.
    • Attach files, such as an electronically graded assignment, to return to the student.
    • Enter notes for then instructor only in the Instructor Notes section.
  6. To save any changes made on the page, do one of the following:
    • Save and Exit to save the changes and go back to the Needs Grading page.
      OR
    • Save and Next to save the changes and go to the next student's submission.
  7. To move to a specific student's submission for this or any other assignment:
    1. Click Jump to....
    2. Select the assignment from the Item dropdown menu.
    3. Select the student from the User dropdown menu.
    4. Select the Attempt from the dropdown menu.
    5. Click Go.

Return Graded Papers to Students

Return electronically graded papers to students through Blackboard.

  1. Click Grade Center in the Control Panel.
  2. Click Full Grade Center.
  3. In the cell that corresponds with the student's assignment, click the dropdown chevron.
  4. Click the Attempt to be accessed. (There may only be one attempt.)
  5. In Section 2: Review Current Attempt, click the link to open or download a submitted file.
  6. In Section 3: Grade Current Attempt:
    • Next to Grade enter a score for the attempt.
    • Enter comments or feedback for the student in Feedback to User.
    • Next to Attach File click Browse My Computer.
    • Navigate to the appropriate file then click Open.
  7. Click Submit.
