We are pleased to announce that the UMKC Instructional Technology Conference 2009 will be held on May 13-14 with preconferences on May 12. As 2009 seems to be the year of change, the theme of this conference is “The Challenge of Change.” Some of us resist change, others thrive on it. Conference 2009 is for the resisters, the thriven and everyone in between. It will provide a platform for faculty to work together to make the transition toward a technology-rich learning environment.
How do you use technology to facilitate learning in your courses? How do you get past “using technology” and form a truly integrated curriculum that engages students and inspires learning? UM System faculty will share share their experiences, strategies and tips through presentations or collaboration sessions. Presentations will be categorized into one of the four conference strands:
- Try It Before You Buy (into) It: You have lots of ideas about enhancing your courses with technology, but you don’t know how to get started. These presentations will do just that…show you how to use the various tools available to you for free or through UMKC.
- Get Started: There are many teaching and learning tools available in the Read-Write Web. But how can they be used in the classroom? These presentations will model and discuss designing content that uses current technologies to engage students in learning. These workshops will focus on pedagogy rather than how to use the tools.
- Ramp It Up: You’ve been using technology to replace the traditional paper and pencil tasks in your courses. So what’s next? Presentations in this strand will demonstrate how teaching, learning and collaboration are evolving along with the technology used in the classroom.
- We’re In This Together: How can technology impact how and what students learn in your courses? Each of these collaboration sessions will provide a focused discussion on a specific instructional technology topic or goal that is of interest to multiple schools at UMKC. A facilitator or facilitators will guide the discussion.
To make choosing the right workshops for you even easier, each one will be marked with session tags indicating what will be covered during that hour. The tags include:
