How Designing Computer Assisted Instruction Improves All Your Teaching
Presenter:Barbara Glesner-Fines
Conference Strand:Get Started
Technical Level:Intermediate
Description:All good teaching has certain common elements. The teacher must select and master the subject matter and skills to be taught, organize learning activities that will actively engage students with that subject matter and allow practice of those skills, and provide prompt and constructive feedback. This presentation describes one tool for improved teaching – translating one’s teaching into computer assisted instruction. Many faculty recognize that computer assisted lessons can be useful for students, providing an efficient and interactive method for learning, supplementing or reviewing class materials. Thus, in recent years, an increasing number of faculty have begun to author computer assisted instruction, whether through the "quiz" features of course management software or through independent cai programs. The process of authoring these lessons has an unanticipated benefit for most of these authors: most have found that the process of authoring these lessons, especially when working in a collaborative setting, enriches the author’s overall classroom teaching. Many find that the improvements in teaching extend not only to teaching the particular topic of the lesson authored, but of all classroom instruction.
This presentation will describes the author's experience in designing computer assisted lessons and her observations from serving on the editorial board of a computer assisted lesson consortium and having reviewed hundreds of lesson pages through that process. The article first describes the process of authoring a computer assisted lesson. It then outlines the ways in which this authoring process can benefit overall teaching by increasing mastery of subject matter; improving planning and organization of classroom instruction; practicing construction of questions for classroom dialogue and examinations; understanding student learning needs and barriers; and focusing on the choice of instructional methods to match learning goals. The article concludes with guidance to faculty who would like to consider authoring cai lessons.
Benefit of Attending This Workshop:Principles of instructional design for computer assisted learning, Varieties of basic cai question types, Choices of software

Writing + Blogging = Learning? Using Blogs in a Writing Intensive Classroom
Presenter:Andrew Granade
Conference Strand:Get Started
Technical Level:Beginner
Description:In the spring of 2008, I began attempting to integrate the use of blogging into my undergraduate writing intensive classroom in an effort to allow students to explore materials outside of those presented in class, to share their writings with their colleagues in a peer review format, and to create new threads of conversation. This presentation will cover my changing use of blogs over the past three semesters and present the steps I have taken and the milestones I have reached in fully integrating their use into the classroom. Roughly half the presentation will focus on pedagogy, detailing why blogs can be useful in the class and student outcomes and responses. The other half of the presentation will present practical beginning steps to using blogs in the classroom for those interested to utilize the technology.
Benefit of Attending This Workshop: Attendees will learn reasons for blogging in the classroom and the pedagogical goals that can be reached through using this technology. They will also gain rudimentary knowledge of how they can begin to use various blogging tools found for free on the internet and how those tools can best be shaped to work in an interactive classroom environment.

Video-Based Supplemental Instruction: Facilitated Learning
Presenter:Sonny Painter
Conference Strand:Get Started
Technical Level:Beginner
Description:The Video-based Supplemental Instruction (VSI) program has been in existence for over 10 years now. This learning methodology provides professionally produced video lectures in an interactive, facilitated learning environment. Graduate or upper-level students engage student learning through discussion and problem solving activities as student receive quality content from skilled lecturers who have pre-produced their lectures in video format. This allows students to engage in small group discussions with their peers, faculty to guarantee quality in the delivery of their content, and facilitators (grad or senior students) to develop classroom management skills, interpersonal communication skills, and observe quality lecture materials. Not only has this increased academics of students on campus, it has also been modified to as distance learning courses for online courses and dual-credit courses for high school students providing more revenue for departments. Implementing VSI is a win-win-win solution for entry level courses.
Benefit of Attending This Workshop:Attendees will see how facilitating with video lectures benefits students and facilitators. They will learn what steps are needed to implement the VSI program in their department or school. They will also hear testimonies from students and facilitators on the advantages of the VSI program.
