Turnitin is a plagiarism detection program that allows instructors to submit student papers for checking against Turnitin's proprietary database. This database contains published text from books and journal articles, from current and archived websites, and from documents submitted by users at other universities. For each submission, an "originality" score is generated, based on the likelihood of the paper's containing plagiarized material. The accompanying report shows suspect material from the student's paper, side-by-side with the text from which it may have been borrowed; the instructor can use this report to make a judgment whether or not the detected similarities warrant further investigation. Turnitin is fully integrated with UMKC's Blackboard course management system. The Blackboard integration, designed to facilitate student's submissions of their own work, interfaces with the course site gradebook for easy access by instructors. Additional information on the use of this plug-in is available in the "Information for UMKC Blackboard Instructors" site (within UMKC's Blackboard system.) Turnitin can also be accessed from the company's web site (http://www.turnitin.com). For more information, please see the Turnitin web access page. Please review Turnitin's Usage Policy prior to using the Turnitin software for the first time.
