About CIAP

Our Mission
-UMKC’s Center for International Academic Programs seeks to increase the internationalization of this campus by supporting and encouraging academic programs and initiatives that are international in focus.  In particular, it works to expand and strengthen the number and quality of international study abroad, research, and fellowship opportunities available to UMKC’s students and faculty.  It does so through a variety of initiatives, including:  the promotion and coordination of intercultural programs on campus; the promotion and coordination of study abroad and international exchange programs; the development of collaborative relations with institutions abroad; the development of policy guidance and program direction for international programs; and the coordination of UMKC’s involvement in the nationally competitive, prestigious fellowships and scholarships programs.

Study Abroad
Studying abroad allows students to travel outside the United States and experience new cultures and environments, while earning academic credit and completing their degrees. By studying abroad, students embark on experiences that have the potential to change their lives, expand their knowledge, create long-lasting friendships, and establish connections all around the globe.

CIAP helps with all aspects of planning for study abroad, including: preparing for departure, overseas stay, and return to the United States.  Currently, UMKC has programs with schools in Australia, Austria, Belgium, China, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Scotland, South Africa, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.  Additional study abroad and exchange relationships are being developed.  Programs are available in English as well as a foreign language, and programs vary in length from a few weeks to an academic year or longer.  When planning to study abroad, it is important to start the process early in order to choose a suitable program, speak with academic and financial aid advisors, and apply for study abroad scholarships.

Students are invited to visit CIAP, located at 5325 Rockhill Road.  All students are encouraged to first attend an info session to find out more information on  international programs, scholarships, and other inquiries.  For additional information regarding study abroad and related scholarships, please visit our study abroad website.

Prestigious Fellowships
CIAP assists students who want to apply for major fellowships that support continued undergraduate study and graduate school.  The major fellowships website identifies an extensive list of these fellowships for both national and international study, including, but not limited to, the Truman, Goldwater, Udall, Fulbright, Rhodes, Marshall, Jack Kent Cooke, NSEP Boren, and Rotary.  These are highly competitive awards that demand careful planning and a commitment of time and effort.  All fellowships require applicants to have a high GPA.  In addition, typical eligibility criteria include a record of community service, evidence of undergraduate research or original work, strong faculty references, and a commitment to future academic or public service.  A number of the fellowships require an on-campus review and nomination before a candidate can move forward to the national competition.  Most of these fellowships provide substantial financial support as well as opportunities for travel and specialized seminars with fellow grantees.  For additional information please call (816) 235-5759.
