APSA Minority Fellows Program (political science)
  • The program is designed primarily for minority students entering a doctoral program in political science for the first time.  The applicant must be in his/her senior year at the college or university level applying to a doctoral program in political science, or currently enrolled in a Master's program and applying to a doctoral program.
  • Applicants must be members of one of the following racial/ethnic minority groups:  African Americans, Latinos/as, and Native Americans (federal and state recognized tribes).

Jacob Javits Fellowship Program
  • Fellowships can be offered to individuals who at the time of application have not yet completed their first full year of doctoral program or a master's degree program (terminal degree for the field of study) or are entering graduate school for the first time in the next academic year.
  • Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens or nationals, permanent residents of the U.S., or citizens of any one of the Freely Associated States.

James Madison Fellowships
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national.
  • Must have earned an undergraduate degree by August 31st of the competition year.
  • For graduate academic work in the subject of the U.S. Constitution.
  • Applicants should be pursuing or intending to pursue a degree in one of the following areas:  Master of Arts degree (MA), Master of Arts in Teaching degree (MAT), Master of Education degree (MEd), or the Master of Arts or Master of Science in Education, with a concentration in American history, American government, political science or other relevant concentration.

NIH-Oxford-Cambridge Program
  • Permits American students to pursue collaborative biomedical research projects between a laboratory at NIH and either Oxford or Cambridge University leading to a Ph.D. from that university.
  • Allows students to complete a Ph.D. in any area of biomedical research in three or four years. Roughly half of their thesis work is done on the NIH campus in Bethesda Maryland and the other half is done at Oxford or Cambridge where they are members of colleges

NSEP-Boren Graduate
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Seniors intending graduate degrees; graduate students; first year professionals at an accredited college or university. Must show evidence of admission into a graduate program.
  • Must be willing to enter into a service agreement upon completion of Fellowship.
  • Study plan must include a modern language other than English (certain restrictions on French and Spanish) as well as student's field of study
  • NO FUNDING for study in Western Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand
  • Fellowships are awarded on merit, with consideration to the relationship of the applicant's proposed study to U.S. national security and expressed commitment to federal service.

Thomas R. Pickering Graduate Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program
  • Sponsored by the US Department of State, Thomas R. Pickering Fellowships are intended to prepare college students for careers in the Foreign Service.
  • Only United States citizens will be considered.
  • Applicants must have a minimum undergraduate grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
  • At time of application, candidates must be seeking admission to graduate school for the following academic year. Winners are expected to enroll in a two-year full-time master's degree program (such as public policy, international affairs, public administration, or academic fields such as business, economics, political science, sociology or foreign languages). U.S. graduate institutions only.
  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale must be maintained throughout participation in the program.

Presidential Management Fellows Program
  • Applicants must complete their graduate degree requirements (master's or doctoral-level degree) during the application year - including a successful defense of dissertation or thesis.

Jennings Randolph Peace Scholar Dissertation Fellowship
  • Citizens of any country
  • Currently enrolled in a recognized doctoral program in the U.S.
  • Must be working on a dissertation related to the peaceful resolution of international conflicts
  • Applicants must have completed all requirements for the degree except the dissertation by the commencement of the award
  • Priority will be given to projects that contribute knowledge relevant to the formulation of policy on international peace and conflict issues
  • The dissertation fellowship award is $17,000 for one year and may be used to support writing or field research

Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Fellowship
  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Seniors, or recently graduated from college and engaged in a relevant international affairs career
  • GPA of 3.2 or higher
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • Record of community, leadership and extra curricular activities, with a strong interest in international affairs
  • Can successfully meet the foreign service requirements (see http://www.careers.state.gov)
  • Applicants must obtain degrees in international affairs or related subject, such as economics, history, political science, public administration, communications, public policy, business administration, and foreign languages

  • Successful Fellows must contractually commit to a minimum of three years of service in an appointment as a Foreign Service Officer

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships
  • Must apply through a Rotary Club (International students may apply through Rotary Club in their own country and must go to a country having Rotary clubs).
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Must NOT have a family member who belongs to Rotary
  • Full-time; good academic standing
  • Undergraduates must have finished sophomore year by the time award is tenable; graduates may be any level
  • No restrictions, age or academic unit
  • Study must take place in a country where Rotary has clubs.  Must relate with the area Rotary Club while abroad, and see the sending club upon return.
  • Tenable September of the next year:  18 months after application process begins
  • DEADLINES: set by individual clubs, dates vary.  Kansas City clubs usually have deadlines in March.

Russian Language Fellowships
  • Graduate students are eligible for Title VIII State Department fellowships to study Russian language in Moscow and St. Petersburg on the American Councils for International Education:  ACTR/ACCELS semester, academic year, and summer programs.

Russian Young Leadership Fellows for Public Service
  • The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of state and International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) sponsor the Russian Young Leadership Fellows Public Service Program (YLF).

Soros Fellowships for New Americans
  • Fellowships provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.
  • A new American is an individual who (1) is a resident alien; i.e. holds a Green Card or, (2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen or (3) is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens.
  • Must hold a bachelor's degree or be in his/her final year of undergraduate study. First and second year graduate students are also eligible.
  • Must not be older than thirty years of age as of November 1, 2004.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
  • The Truman Scholarship is a merit-based grant of up to $30,000 awarded to undergraduate students, who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in public service.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident alien, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa, a U.S. national.
  • Must attend an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Generally fall in the upper 10-15% of their class with a GPA of 3.6 or higher.
  • Future commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit and advocacy sectors.
  • Applicant must be nominated for a Truman scholarship by their college's Truman faculty representative.
