Cambridge - (NIH) - Health Sciences Research
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or permanent resident with a Bachelors degree from an accredited U.S. college or university
  • Must have undergraduate preparation in biology, chemistry (both inorganic and organic), physics, and mathematics
  • Outstanding academic record and show exceptional promise for a career in biomedical research
  • Previous laboratory research experience is strong qualification
  • Value: stipend of $21,300 per year as well as health benefits and other academic support at Cambridge and the NIH

  • Graduating seniors not eligible to apply.

  • Must currently receive financial aid, OR have verifiable need for financial assistance to study abroad
  • Priority given to students with no previous experience in chosen country/countries of study

Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships
  • Must apply through a Rotary Club (International students may apply through Rotary Club in their own country and must go to a country having Rotary clubs).
  • U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • Must NOT have a family member who belongs to Rotary
  • Full-time; good academic standing
  • Undergraduates must have finished sophomore year by the time award is tenable; graduates may be any level
  • No restrictions, age or academic unit
  • Study must take place in a country where Rotary has clubs.  Must relate with the area Rotary Club while abroad, and see the sending club upon return.
  • Tenable September of the next year:  18 months after application process begins
  • DEADLINES: set by individual clubs, dates vary.  Kansas City clubs usually have deadlines in March.

Heart of America Japan-America Society Scholarship
  • This award is designed to promote social, cultural and educational exchange between Japan and the United States.

  • One award, approximately $1,000 - exact amount determined annually.
  • U.S. Citizen or Japanese Student studying at UMKC.

  • Demonstrated financial need.

NSEP-Boren Graduate
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Seniors intending graduate degrees; graduate students; first year professionals at an accredited college or university. Must show evidence of admission into a graduate program.
  • Must be willing to enter into a service agreement upon completion of Fellowship.
  • Study plan must include a modern language other than English (certain restrictions on French and Spanish) as well as student's field of study
  • NO FUNDING for study in Western Europe, Australia, Canada, New Zealand
  • Fellowships are awarded on merit, with consideration to the relationship of the applicant's proposed study to U.S. national security and expressed commitment to federal service.

Bridging Scholarship for Study Abroad in Japan
  • Bridging Scholarships defray travel and living expenses related to study abroad programs in Japan. 
  • Stipends of $2,500 to $4,000 are provided for semester and academic year study.  
  • Undergraduate students who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents are eligible to apply. 
  • Japanese language study is not a prerequisite.

  • For one year of graduate study in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Scholarship covers tuition, travel, living expenses and housing for one year.

Russia - U.S. Young Leadership Fellows for Public Service
  • The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) of the U.S. Department of state and International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) sponsor the Russian - U.S. Young Leadership Fellows Public Service Program (YLF).  
  • The YLF supports a year of study and experiential learning in the Russian Federation.

Russian Language Fellowships
  • Graduate students are eligible for Title VIII State Department fellowships to study Russian language in Moscow and St. Petersburg on the American Councils for International Education:  ACTR/ACCELS semester, academic year, and summer programs.

  • The GAF provides financial support to UMKC women students currently enrolled in graduate or first professional programs.  
  • The fund is focused on the dimension beyond the classroom and thus does not fund tuition and textbooks. It is, however, designed to facilitate studies and to enrich and encourage educational experiences.

American Women's Club (AWC) Scholarship Foundation

  • The AWC Scholarship Foundation has been making it possible for American women to study in Sweden.  
  • The scholarship is granted in the form of a travel grant for the equivalent of a round trip APEX air ticket from their home city in the USA to Stockholm.  
  • The applicant must be currently living in the U.S., 18 years of age or older, an American female citizen, and accepted for a period of study or research at a Swedish educational institute or agency.

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
  • For sophomores and juniors who intend to pursue a career in the natural sciences, mathematics, or engineering.
  • Must be a United States citizen, a resident alien, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa or the Commonwealth of the Mariana Islands, a United States national. 
  • Must have a college grade-point average of at least "B" (or the equivalent) and be in the upper fourth of his or her class.
  • Applicants must be nominated by the Campus Goldwater Committee.

Jacob Javits Fellowship Program
  • Fellowships can be offered to individuals who at the time of application have not yet completed their first full year of doctoral program or a master's degree program (terminal degree for the field of study) or are entering graduate school for the first time in the next academic year.

  • For graduate academic work in the subject of the U.S. Constitution.

Harry S. Truman Scholarship
  • The Truman Scholarship is an approximately $26,000 merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students, who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparation for careers in government.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident alien, or, in the case of nominees from American Samoa, a U.S. national.
  • Must attend an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Generally fall in the upper 10-15% of their class with a GPA of 3.6 or higher.
  • Future commitment to a career in government or the nonprofit and advocacy sectors.
  • Applicant must be nominated for a Truman scholarship by their college's Truman faculty representative.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship in Environmental Policy
  • Each year, the Foundation awards 80 undergraduate scholarships of up to $5,000 to sophomore or juniors in fields related to the environment, or to a Native American or Alaska Natives working in fields related to health care or tribal policy.

Soros Fellowships for New Americans
  • Fellowships provide opportunities for continuing generations of able and accomplished New Americans to achieve leadership in their chosen fields. The Program is established in recognition of the contributions New Americans have made to American life and in gratitude for the opportunities the United States has afforded the donors and their family.
  • A new American is an individual who (1) is a resident alien; i.e. holds a Green Card or, (2) has been naturalized as a U.S. citizen or (3) is the child of two parents who are both naturalized citizens.
  • Must hold a bachelor's degree or be in his/her final year of undergraduate study. First and second year graduate students are also eligible.

Thomas R. Pickering Foreign Affairs Fellowship Program
  • Sponsored by the US Department of State, Thomas R. Pickering Fellowships are intended to prepare college students for careers in the Foreign Service.
  • Fellowships fund up to two years of college and a year of graduate school, including tuition, room, board, books and fees. 
  • Fellows must commit to pursuing a graduate degree in international studies at an approved institution. 
  • Second-year college students who are US citizens with minimum grade point averages of 3.2 are eligible to apply.

Leonard M. Rieser Fellowships
  • The Fellowship will annually provide one-time awards of $2,500-$5,000 to between three and five undergraduate students seeking to explore the connections between science, technology, global security, and public policy (science students are especially encouraged to apply). 
  • It will be presented to students whose academic interests, extra-curricular activities, and career aspirations demonstrate an interest in the role of scientists in formulating public policy and in addressing global security policy challenges.

  • The program is designed primarily for minority students entering a doctoral program in political science for the first time.  The applicant must be in his/her senior year at the college or university level applying to a doctoral program in political science, or currently enrolled in a Master's program and applying to a doctoral program.

  • Citizens of any country
  • Currently enrolled in a recognized doctoral program in the U.S.
  • Must be working on a dissertation related to the peaceful resolution of international conflicts
  • Applicants must have completed all requirements for the degree except the dissertation by the commencement of the award
  • Priority will be given to projects that contribute knowledge relevant to the formulation of policy on international peace and conflict issues
  • The dissertation fellowship award is $17,000 for one year and may be used to support writing or field research

  • Must be a U.S. citizen
  • Seniors, or recently graduated from college and engaged in a relevant international affairs career
  • GPA of 3.2 or higher

  • Record of community, leadership and extra curricular activities, with a strong interest in international affairs
  • Can successfully meet the foreign service requirements (see http://www.careers.state.gov)
  • Applicants must obtain degrees in international affairs or related subject, such as economics, history, political science, public administration, communications, public policy, business administration, and foreign languages

  • Successful Fellows must contractually commit to a minimum of three years of service in an appointment as a Foreign Service Officer
