It is HIGHLY recommend that you make housing reservations before coming to Kansas City!

PLEASE NOTE:  Admission to the University does not guarantee that you will receive University housing.  Students are not required to live on campus.  You are responsible for arranging your own housing.  UMKC is not responsible for your housing location or situation.

The rates were a bit confusing on the Residential Life website so here is a breakdown making it a bit easier to understand.

The fees posted here are estimated for the entire academic year.  Residence Halls are closed during the Christmas holiday but if a student needs to stay, we can likely help them out.

The newer dormitory is Oak Street Hall:

OFF-Campus Housing Options

UMKC is an urban campus and please note that Kansas City is VERY spread out and our transportation system is very limited. As in any urban city, there are areas of town that are safer than others. Please be careful when choosing where you might live off campus. As a lifelong Kansas City resident, our Study Abroad Coordinator, Kate Wozniak, will be happy to talk with you regarding your decision. She can discuss the neighborhood, the distance from campus, etc. and any other questions you might have.
E-mail her the address(es) BEFORE you make your decision and details to: wozniakkj@umkc.edu

Our first recommendation (if you are staying a year or longer) is one of the residence halls/dorms - if you haven't submitted an application, do so soon as these fill quickly. TOO LATE ... sorry, the UMKC residence halls are now full for fall 2006!

SHARP
(Student Housing and Referral Program)
UMKC's Off-Campus Housing Database:  Many students post on this site and it can be useful when looking for a furnished apartment with a roommate (who may also be a UMKC student).

Relocation Central
They ask you to register.  They find apartments all over the city vs. just UMKC area.  Mostly, apartments are unfurnished. Again, be sure to let them know the boundaries where you are looking and that (most likely) you will need t
o walk to campus.

Our office continues to search for other housing options and will post things here or email you directly if opportunities come up.  Please email Kate with your U.S. address when you have finalized your housing arrangements.

Hotels Near the UMKC Campus
Although we highly recommend that you have your housing completely situated before arriving in Kansas City, you may need a few nights at a hotel before your arrangements are finalized.  Be sure to mention that you are a UMKC student to get a special rate. The rates and rooms are subject to availability.

Homestead Suites because it offers a good UMKC rate ($60 + tax per night) and is close to campus (1.5 miles) and it is conveniently located right across from the Country Club Plaza where you can find lots of great restaurants and shopping.  It might be best to call or email to get the UMKC rate - online booking will not show this offer.

KCI Shuttle Service can take you from airport straight to the Homesteads Suites Country Club Plaza for a one-way price of $17.

Arrival Information
One thing can be said about Kansas City's weather... it is unpredictable!  In other words, be versatile in what you bring.  As a UMKC student, you will have access to the UMKC Swinney Recreation Center.  There is an indoor track, racquetball, basketball, weight room, and a pool.  It is a good idea to bring clothes for any of these activities you will be participating in.
