Wu Scholarship 2008

The award honors Dr. William Q. Wu, descendant of a scholarly family of Canton, China, who received his undergraduate and medical degrees in the U.S.  Dr. Wu served in WWII, practiced as a neurosurgeon in Kansas City, is professor-emeritus of UMKC’s School of Medicine, and is active in associations which focus on U.S.-China relations.

 The Wu Scholarship for 2008 is for UMKC students who are U.S. citizens.  Please note that students who are Visiting Students are not eligible. 

Award Value: $500 to $2500, depending on number of qualified applicants  

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Ø      U.S. Citizen

Ø      Full-time

Ø      Studying some aspect of China, e.g. political system, history, art, language, scientific innovation, etc.

Ø      3.25 GPA or higher. 

Ø      Undergraduates:  must have had two UMKC semesters before applying.

Ø      Graduate students:  must have had one previous semester before applying.

Ø      First Professional:  must have had one previous semester before applying.

 PROCEDURES

Ø      Complete application

Ø      Two academic references

Ø      CIAP will secure one copy of your UMKC transcript

Ø      Essay should include (two page, double spaced maximum):

·        What kinds of experiences sparked your interest in China?

·        What do you see yourself doing with reference to China in ten years’ time?

Ø      The completed application and materials listed above must be turned into CIAP on or before the deadline listed below

Ø      Finalists will be interviewed by the Wu committee

Ø      The award is to be applied against either international travel to China or the to student’s UMKC account for Fall Semester 2008

Ø      The Committee reserves the right not to make an award in any competition year

 Do not attach a resume or anything not requested.

 Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
