NEW for Fall Semester, 2007!

INTERNATIONAL Living Learning Community (ILLC)
in the
Oak Street Residence Hall

UMKC's Newest Residence Hall

New in August 2004, Oak Street Hall is a place where you'll find study rooms, kitchenettes and social lounges on each floor. With room for 559 students, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the high-tech classroom, music practice rooms and outdoor courtyard.

Live the American campus life experience with a floor plan designed into 11 divided "community areas" where you can get to know other students with similar international interests and academic goals.

The Center for International Academic Programs (CIAP) will be launching an International Living Learning Community (ILLC) in the fall of 2007. Living Learning Communities are housing arrangements in which members share living space in the residential hall and have an academic assistant who plans pertinent programming around a specific topic or subject area. The benefits of participating in a Living Learning Community are well documented in the research on university life: On average, members of Living Learning Communities attain greater academic achievement (GPA), have stronger ties to their residential community (lower drop-out rates), and are more likely to describe their university experience as "highly satisfying". And all this takes place while exploring a subject or theme that is interesting and important to you!

The International Living Learning Community will be housed in the Oak Street Residential Hall. The members of the community will include American students who are interested in international topics, cultures and peoples; and international students who want to have more frequent and informal contact with interested American students, while learning about American culture.

Activities will depend on the interests of the students chosen to be members of the community; however, programming may include:

·      Language tables or dinners, in which participants practice a language other than English

·      Presentations about world cultures by international students, possibly including a sampling of foods, music, traditional dance or traditional games of that culture

·      Faculty presentations about their international work, international travel or the trends they see in their fields that are developing internationally

·      Outings to community events which are international in nature, such as the Ethnic Enrichment Festival at Swope Park, the Kansas City Irish Fest, the local Scottish Highland Games, Sister Cities of Kansas City events, Alliance Francaise events, Kansas International Film Festival, etc.

·      Participation in International Education Week events, including the International Career Forum & Luncheon

·      Information sessions about how to plan a study abroad experience, including informal presentations by students and alumni who have studied in other countries

·      Volunteer opportunities working with Sister Cities International, Inc. or with political refugees living in the KC metro area

·      And more!
