UMKC Applied Language Institute (ALI)
ALI specializes in teaching English as a second language for business, academic, or personal reasons. The Institute is a dual effort between UMKC and Penn Valley Community College. Short term, Long term, and Summer programs are offered, as well as preparation for professional standardized tests like the GMAT and GRE.
UMKC Financial Aid and Scholarships OfficeThe Financial Aid and Scholarships Office provides financial assistance to students who otherwise would be unable to attend UMKC. It also administers campus-wide merit and talent-based scholarship programs. Many of these funds can be applied to study abroad. UMKC International Student Affairs Office (ISAO)ISAO is the university office responsible for monitoring and reporting the admission and enrollment of nonimmigrant international students and scholars. All university related international admission documents are processed and controlled through this office. ISAO provides assistance to international students, scholars, and visitors by way of immigration related advising, personal counseling, and cross-cultural programming. ISAO and IAP frequently coordinate on international events and programs.
The Student Life Office sells International Student Identity Cards (ISIC) that are great for travel discounts and much more.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is recognized as the lead federal agency for protecting the health and safety of people - at home and abroad, providing credible information to enhance health decisions, and promoting health through strong partnerships. CDC serves as the national focus for developing and applying disease prevention and control, environmental health, and health promotion and education activities designed to improve the health of the people of the United States.
The Central Intelligence Agency publishes country profiles for nations all around the world. If you are planning on traveling outside the U.S. or are just generally interested in the world, this resource is reliable and informative.
Institute of International EducationIIE describes itself as, "the world's most experienced education exchange and training organization." At their site, you can learn about their international training programs, search listings of over 4,000 academic year and short-term study abroad programs that can take American students, graduates, teachers and other professionals to every corner of the earth; and peruse IIE's research on international education issues.
International Country Calling Codes: International Telephoning Made EasyThis website is designed to help the user make international phone calls. The user chooses the country where the call is being made and the location they are calling. The website then gives the correct country codes and dialing procedures for the phone call. It also includes a Quick Reference Phone Book.
NAFSA: Association of International EducatorsNAFSA promotes the exchange of students and scholars to and from the United States. With over 8,000 members in all 50 states and 80 countries, NAFSA provides a forum for discussion of issues and a network for sharing information as it seeks to increase awareness of and support for international education in higher education, in government, and in the community.
National Center for Infectious Diseases, Traveler's Health
Published by the Center for Disease Control, this resource is a comprehensive index of the health and safety issues associated with going overseas. Health information is indexed by destination, as well as a wide variety of other health articles, resources, and links. This site also includes a "Traveler's Checklist" to help organize pre-departure preparation with an emphasis on health and medical concerns.

U.S. Department of State: Studying Abroad
The State Department has turned one of their pamphlets into a website. It includes information that is useful to all people traveling overseas, not just students. It also includes a long list of helpful links to information regarding obtaining proper travel documents, travel benefits for students, and a whole section on "things to know before you go."
U.S. Department of State: Travel Warnings and Consular Information Sheets
The State Department regularly publishes up-to-date information on conditions all around the globe.
- Travel Warnings are issued when the State Department decides, based on all relevant information, to recommend that Americans avoid travel to a certain country. Countries where avoidance of travel is recommended will have Travel Warnings as well as Consular Information Sheets.
- Public Announcements are a means to disseminate information about terrorist threats and other relatively short-term and/or trans-national conditions posing significant risks to the security of American travelers. They are made any time there is a perceived threat and usually have Americans as a particular target group. In the past, Public Announcements have been issued to deal with short-term coups, bomb threats to airlines, violence by terrorists and anniversary dates of specific terrorist events.
- Consular Information Sheets are available for every country of the world. They include such information as location of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the subject country, unusual immigration practices, health conditions, minor political disturbances, unusual currency and entry regulations, crime and security information, and drug penalties. If an unstable condition exists in a country that is not severe enough to warrant a Travel Warning, a description of the condition(s) may be included under an optional section entitled "Safety/Security." Consular Information Sheets generally do not include advice, but present information in a factual manner so the traveler can make his or her own decisions concerning travel to a particular country.
What's up with Culture?: On-line Cultural Training Resource for Study Abroad
This website is an on-line training resource developed to support and enhance a student's ability to make successful cultural adjustments when going abroad and returning home. It includes exercises, games, and true-life stories. It concentrates on the skills, attitudes, and behaviors which all study abroad students, regardless of their specific destination, will find useful.
Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce
The Chamber is committed to the continuous improvement of the business environment in Greater Kansas City. They specialize in solutions to business and civic challenges. The website includes an index listing events hosted by the Chamber. This page also contains general information about the Kansas City area.
International Relations Council (IRC)IRC's mission is, "To provide leadership in world affairs education and foster public participation in international policy decisions." IRC is a member of the World Affairs Councils of America, along with some 100 other organizations. IRC is headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri and serves the two-state metro area as well as outlying communities. IRC is the region's lead organization for world affairs programming for all ages. The site includes a calendar of upcoming international events in the metropolitan Kansas City area.
