2013 Competition
*Note: The Scholarship varies
its recipients from year to year. In odd years, it is
awarded to American students studying in China, and in
even years it is given to Chinese students studying at
UMKC. In 2013 the competition will ONLY be open to
American students. Chinese should check back again in
2014.*

Eligibility criteria
•U.S. Citizen
•Full-time
•Studying some aspect of China, e.g. political system,
history, art, language, scientific innovation, etc.
•3.25 GPA or higher.
•Undergraduates: must have had two UMKC semesters before
applying.
•Graduate students: must have had one previous semester
before applying.
•First Professional: must have had one UMKC
semester before applying

•Students must be on a valid F-1 or J-1 Visa
from the People’s Republic of China
•Full-time, degree seeking students

Procedures
•Complete the application
•Two academic references
•IAP will secure one copy of your UMKC transcript
•Essay should include (two page, double spaced maximum):
••What kinds of experiences sparked your interest in
China?
•What do you see yourself doing with reference to China
in ten years' time?
•The completed application and materials listed above
must be turned into IAP on or before the deadline listed
below
•Finalists will be interviewed by the Wu committee
•The award is to be applied against
international travel to China and will be
applied to the student's UMKC account for Fall
Semester 2013
•The Committee reserves the right not to make an award
in any competition year(

Procedures
•Complete the application
•On the application, provide names of two
academic references and have them write your
letter of recommendation and send it to us (or
you can deliver it to us in a sealed envelope).
•Our office will secure one copy of your UMKC
transcript
•Write an essay to include (two page, double
spaced maximum):
•Information about yourself and your
individual academic program
•Your plans upon graduation
•Your long-term career goals
•The completed application and materials listed
above must be turned into our office on or
before the deadline listed below
•Finalists will be interviewed by the Wu
Committee
•The award is to be applied to the student’s
UMKC account for Fall Semester 2014
•The Committee reserves the right not to make an
award in any competition year
