Using Personal Computers on Campus

Personal computers may connect to UMKC's network via a wireless connection anywhere wireless service is available on campus.

http://www.umkc.edu/is/nt/wirelessnetwork.asp

If you're going to be living in a residence hall, you can connect your personal computer to the wired campus network in your room.

http://www.umkc.edu/is/support/services/residenceHall/

Network in the residence halls access - both wired and wireless - is controlled through "Clean Access", a logon portal.  This program protects your computer and the campus network by checking to make sure your computer is up-to-date with the latest security and virus scan software.

UMKC provides McAfee anti-virus software to all UMKC students.  You will need to have this software installed on your machine to connect to the Internet from the residence halls.  When you graduate, be sure to uninstall the software, as it's only licensed to UMKC students.

If you have a Windows-based computer, it will need to have the most recent critical updates for Windows installed before Clean Access will allow you to access the network in the residence halls. Enabling automatic updates in Windows reduces the chances that you will have to install these updates yourself each time you log on through Clean Access. Full information on how to configure your computer for automatic Windows updates can be found here:

http://www.umkc.edu/is/support/services/cleanaccess/Using Windows Update.ResNet.pdf

WARNING: Some software is strictly prohibited on campus, and Clean Access may require that you remove one or more applications before you are allowed network access. For example, peer-to-peer (P2P) file-sharing software must be removed to increase security and reliability of the campus network.  If you have programs such as Napster or BitTorrent installed, you will not be able to log on to the campus network until it has been removed. Be sure you have read the Copyright Essentials page (referenced above). Also, see the university's position on peer-to-peer file sharing.

Computer Labs on Campus
Information Services manages 10 general-use student computer labs on campus.  Student Assistants are available in these labs to help you use the computers. All UMKC students receive 150 pages of print quota per week, which resets every Saturday evening.  Please plan your print use accordingly.

We ask that you follow all lab policies while in our facilities.  These are posted in the "Information Stations" within each lab and are available online.

The labs are located conveniently throughout campus.  There is a map with the buildings which house our general use labs in your "IS Labs Support Services" brochure. Hours change throughout the academic year and can be found at:
