Reporting Problem Email via Netscape Messenger

This site is only for reporting problem email received at UMKC or originating from UMKC.  If you have other email abuse problems, contact your Internet Service Provider, www.spamcop.net for spam, or for threats, your local law enforcement.

This demonstration uses Netscape Messenger 4.5.

See also the general information: Responding to Problem Email.

Simply forwarding or printing a note does not typically include information essential for tracing the origin of the note. The following demonstration shows how to reveal this important "header" information and forward it for expert investigation.

Netscape offers two ways to access your University or other electronic mail. If you handle email via Netscape Navigator, for example via the Outlook Web Interface at www.umkc.edu/exchange/ ,  then these facilities can not expose the information necessary to trace a note. If you need to expose this information, you must use another one of the many ways to access your University email. The remainder of this document deals with one of these ways to access email, Netscape Messenger. For help configuring Netscape Messenger, please contact the UMKC Help Desk at (816) 235-2000 or mailto:callcenter@umkc.edu .

1. View the problem note:

2. While viewing the problem note, click on the menu bar "View", then "Headers", then "All".

Select View > Headers > All

3. This should reveal somewhat more information about the origin and path of the note:

4. Click the Forward button Forward or select from menu "Message" item "Forward":

5. Enter the address to which the mail will be reported. For UMKC users, this is "abuse@umkc.edu" as below. Identify yourself. State how to contact you and any other useful information. Press the "Send" button to send the note.

UMKC Information Services should acknowledge your note within one business day. If a note threatens violence to persons or property, you may want to contact the UMKC Police Department, 816-235-1515.
