Reporting Problem Email via Microsoft Outlook Client

This site is only for reporting problem email received at UMKC or originating from UMKC.  If you have other email abuse problems, contact your Internet Service Provider, www.spamcop.net for spam, or for threats, your local law enforcement.

You can use the following procedure only for reporting spam to the UMKC Exchange administrators.  For reporting any problem email to any other authority via Microsoft Outlook 2000/XP, click here.

To report spam at UMKC, you now only need to move your piece of spam to a folder within Outlook.  There are two ways to do this.

The first way is simpler to setup, but takes longer for each message:

  1. Right-Click on the bad mail, and select 'Move to Folder'
  2. In the resulting folder list, scroll to the bottom of the list, expand 'Public Folders', then expand 'All Public Folders', then expand 'Kansas City'.
  3. Then click on the 'Spam Reports' folder, and click 'OK'.

The second way takes a little setup, but then moving junk mail is much easier once you get it setup.  Note that these steps only work on Outlook 2003.

  1. Click File, select New, and select 'Navigation Pane Shortcut'
  2. Scroll down to the bottom of the folder list.  Expand 'All Public Folders', then expand 'Kansas City'.
  3. Click on the 'Spam Reports' folder and click 'OK'.
Shortcut instructions for Outlook 2003 and newer

 Shortcut instructions for Outlook 2000/XP
  • Click File, select New, and select 'Outlook Bar Shortcut'.  (If you don't see this in the list, click the double-down-arrow in the menu list to show all of the menu options.)
  • In the resulting folder list, expand 'Public Folders', 'All Public Folders', and 'Kansas City'.
  • Click on 'Spam Reports' and click 'OK'.
  • In the short-cut bar on the left of Outlook, scroll to the bottom to locate your new icon.  Click on the icon, and drag it to the top of the shortcut bar.

  • Once this is setup, to report your spam, simply drag your spam from your mailbox to the shortcut on your Outlook Bar.

Please note that you will not be able to see messages once they are moved to the spam reporting folder.  If you accidentally move something to the Spam Reports folder, please email abuse@umkc.edu so that we can return the message to you.

If a note threatens violence to persons or property, you may want to contact the UMKC Police Department, 816-235-1515.
