The following policies are in place in order to provide the best environment possible for UMKC
Students using the General Use Computer Labs. Patrons are also reminded to follow all of UMKC's
policies regarding Computer Usage and the Student Code of Conduct.
General Use Computer Lab Policy Index
UMKC Computer Usage Guidelines
UMKC Student Conduct Policies and Procedures
Disturbances
The General Use Student Computer Labs managed by the Information Services department are
provided as a resource for UMKC students to complete computer-based coursework and assignments.
Any conduct or activity which disturbs the lab environment is not allowed. Anyone causing a
persistent disturbance will be asked to leave the labs.
Children
Children and infants are not allowed in the computer labs. The computer labs house delicate
equipment and distraction-free environments are needed for patrons to do their work.
Closing
Patrons must leave the lab when directed by a Student Assistant. To ensure that the labs
are closed in a timely manner, printers are turned off 15 minutes before the labs close.
For planning purposes, information on lab hours can be found here:
http://www.umkc.edu/is/Labs/hoursLocations/
Portable Storage Devices
Portable storage is not provided by IS-labs. Patrons need to provide their own portable storage
devices, such as USB drives. USB drives can be plugged in to the USB ports on the front of
the CPU or on the sides of some monitors. Please ask a Student Assistant for help if you have
trouble locating a USB port.
UMKC provides students with storage space on campus servers (the Q:\ drive). UMKC students can
save files to their
Q: drive space if they don't have portable storage with them.
Equipment
Only the lab system administrators are allowed to make modifications to lab equipment. Patrons are
not authorized to unplug any wires from the machines, as this causes wear and tear on the machine
and the wiring.
Scanners, mice, keyboards, etc. are not allowed to be removed from the workstation to which
they are attached. USB drives can be used on machines with a USB port located on the front of
the CPU or on the side of the monitor where it is easily accessible. No other devices may
be plugged in to the network or electrical outlets in any IS-managed lab. This includes
laptops.
Changes to the software configuration or installation of new software is restricted. If you
are a faculty member and need to have software added or reconfigured on IS-lab machines,
please fill out the Software
Change/Addition Request form. If you are a student and need software installed for your
coursework, notify your professor so that they can make this request.
Food and Beverages
Food and beverages are not allowed in IS-managed labs. Any food or beverages brought into the
labs must be in a sealed container and kept in your bag. If you have a sealable drink
container, you may keep it on the table, provided you keep it sealed when not drinking from it.
Irate Behavior
Persons exhibiting hostile or threatening behavior such as yelling, swearing, or disregarding
requests made by lab personnel will be asked to leave the labs. Campus Police may be called
upon to mediate these situations.
Noise Levels
Any activity which causes enough noise to be disturbing the other lab patrons must be discontinued or
corrected. When talking, please speak quietly. Everyone must use headphones when listening to sounds on
the computers and keep the noise level down so that it does not disturb the other patrons
working in the labs.
Cell phones conversations are not allowed to be conducted within the labs.
Priority of Use
The computer labs are for academic use. Patrons needing to use computers to complete academic
assignments are given priority to those using the computers for recreation. Patrons needing to
use special equipment or software, such as the scanner or Universal Access Stations, are given
priority for using those machines.
Assistance from Campus Police
Student Assistants are responsible for informing patrons of lab policies and procedures. If the
patrons refuse to follow lab policies after being informed of them, the Student Assistant will
call Campus Police for assistance in mediating the situation.
Use of Lab Supplies
Supplies contained in the computer lab must be used within the computer lab only. Blank paper
may not be taken from the lab unless it has been counted against print quotas.
Lab Storage
Materials contained within IS General Use Computer Labs must be directly related to lab function.
The labs may not be used as storage facilities by faculty/staff/students. This includes
class-related materials and paraphernalia.
Animals
Only service animals are allowed within the labs.
If you are having problems in any of the public labs please contact one of
the Lab Student Assistants for help.
If student assistants are unavailable in
your lab you may also contact the
UMKC Call Center
for assistance.
