Mobile Devices → Outlook Live Email Setup for Students

Your phone will need an email client capable of connecting to IMAP servers. The quick settings table below contains the settings that most phones require. More details concerning individual phone operating systems can be found below.

Quick Settings

Email Address:  yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu (replace "yourSSO" with your UMKC SSO username)
Server Address:  m.outlook.com
IMAP & SMTP Server Address: 1. Go to http://mail.umkc.edu.
2. Sign in with your Windows Live ID (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username) and Outlook Live email password.
3. The first part of the URL in the browser address bar is your server name.
Example: If, after signing in, the first part of the URL in the browser address bar is https://pod51000.outlook.com, then pod51000.outlook.com is your server name.
Username:  Your Windows Live ID (full email address)
Password:  Your Outlook Live email password

Detailed Instructions for Android

NOTE: These instructions are provided as guidance. If they do not work, take the server information found in the Quick Settings at the top of this page and contact your cell phone service provider for additional support.

Android 2.1:

  1. Tap the gray Applications button.
  2. Tap Email
  3. Type in your full email address in the email address box (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username)
  4. Type your Outlook Live email password in the password box
  5. Tap Next
  6. Choose Exchange
  7. In the Domain\Username box type in your Windows Live ID (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO )
  8. Under server type in m.outlook.com
  9. Check the box to Use secure connection (SSL)
  10. Check the box to Accept all SSL certificates
  11. Tap Next
  12. Check Send email from this account by default
  13. Tap Next
  14. Type in a name for the account
  15. Type in your name
  16. Tap Done
Your email should now download. The first download can take several minutes. By default, only the last 14 days of data will sync.

Android 2.2:
  1. Open All Apps
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Choose Accounts & Sync
  4. Tap Add Account at the bottom right
  5. Tap Exchange ActiveSync
  6. Enter your full email address in the email address field (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username)
  7. Enter your Outlook Live email password in the password field
  8. Tap Manual Setup
  9. Under Server Address, clear out the mail.umkc.edu entry and enter m.outlook.com for the server address
  10. Make sure Use SSL connection checkbox is checked
  11. Tap Next
  12. Choose which items you want to synchronize and tap Next
Your email should now download. The first download can take several minutes. By default, only the last 14 days of data will sync.

Android 4.0:
  1. Tap mail from your app tray
  2. Enter your full email address (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu)
  3. Enter your SSO Password
  4. Tap Manual setup
  5. Tap Exchange
  6. Enter yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu in the domain\username field
  7. Enter your server name. (see quick steps above to find server name)
  8. Click Next
  9. Click OK
  10. Click Next
  11. Choose which items you would like to synchronize and tap Next
  12. Tap Activate
  13. Enter a nickname for this account if desired (e.g. UMKC)
  14. Tap Next
Your email should now download. The first download can take several minutes. By default, only the last 14 days of data will sync.

Detailed Instructions for iOS (iPhone / iPad / iPod Touch)

iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch using ActiveSync:

  1. Tap Settings on the Home screen
  2. Tap Mail, Contacts and Calendars
  3. Tap Add Account...
  4. Tap Microsoft Exchange
  5. In the Email box, enter your Windows Live ID (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username)
  6. In the User Name box, enter your Windows Live ID (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username)
  7. In the Password box, enter your Outlook Live email password
  8. If you want, you can enter a different descriptive name for your account in the Description box
  9. Tap Next
  10. You may see one or more certificate warnings pop up – if so, tap Accept
  11. For iPads Only: You will need to enter your SMTP server (see Quick Settings above for instructions on finding your server)
  12. Tap Next
  13. Choose what you would like to sync
  14. Tap Done
Note: If you have synced your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad with Outlook or iCal and Address Book using iTunes, you will lose that data if you choose to sync Calendars or Contacts.

Detailed Instructions for Blackberry

Note: These instructions are provided as guidance. If they do not work, take the server information found in the Quick Settings at the top of this page and contact your cell phone service provider for additional support.

Blackberry:

  1. From the Blackberry home screen, click Blackberry Setup.
  2. Click Set up Internet Email.
  3. Click Add An Email Account.
  4. Type your email address (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu, where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username) and password (type your password incorrectly so the device will not auto-configure), then click Next.
  5. Click I will provide the settings to add this email account, when auto configuration fails.
  6. Scroll down and then click Next.
  7. Select Internet Service Provider Email (POP/IMAP), and then click Next.
  8. Choose I will provide the settings to add this email account, if asked, and click Next.
  9. Type in your username as yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu (where yourSSO is your UMKC SSO username)
  10. Type your Outlook Live email password in the Password field (correctly this time)
  11. See Quick Settings at the top of this page to retrieve your IMAP and SMTP server settings
  12. Input your IMAP server information found in step 11
  13. Click Next
  14. Input your SMTP server information found in step 11
  15. Click OK
