New Printing and Copying Services (8/21/2009)
Over the summer months, Information Services and the University Libraries partnered on a project to enhance printing and copying in the IS Labs and University Libraries. The new system works seamlessly with Roo Bucks (UMKC's One Card system) so students will be able to easily print or copy beyond their weekly print quota. Students will no longer need to purchase separate cards for printing or copying once the system is fully implemented in the Library. In addition to streamlining print and copy services, sustainability requires reducing paper waste and decreasing overall printing.
To further decrease UMKC's carbon footprint, Student Government Association Executives and IS agreed to set the weekly print quota for this academic year at 100 pages per week or an allocation of $5 per week ($.05 for black and white 8 1/2 x 11). Duplex printing is also available in some labs to help conserve printing. For more information on how this new system works, please visit the IS Labs website and click on the lab FAQ. Information on library printing resources and photocopying services is available at Printing in the Libraries. To learn more about other IT resources at UMKC, check out the Student Computer Resource Guide. It contains a wealth of information including location of Internet bars, IS lab hours and locations, email account questions, and more.
Tuesday Morning Outage (8/4/2009)
Due to the storms/lightning on the morning of 8/4/09 we had a UPS fail at Newcomb Hall that took down a number of servers including the campus web server, Exchange and voice mail. The good news is it protected the equipment from any damage but failed to switch to bypass mode. We had to manually switch to bypass and then restarted all of the equipment. Systems have all be restored and are now operating normal.
Redirected Folders (Change From Roaming Profiles) (3/26/2009)
UMKC Information Services has switched over to redirected folders in the IS-managed labs and ILE rooms (from
roaming profiles). Redirected folders load much faster at login because there is
no need to copy files over to the local workstation. Additionally, your
redirected folders will be stored on your Q: drive, so that you can now access
your files from off-campus using the UMKC VPN client.

Faculty and Staff to Update Emergency Contact Information in myHR (12/18/2008)
Faculty and staff are now able review, enter, and update personal contact information in myHR. The University will use the information to alert faculty and staff in the event of a campus emergency using the Emergency Mass Notification System (EMNS).
According to Terry Robb, project manager, "The myHR system will replace the old Webapps system for managing personal contact data." Faculty and staff can enter home phone, alternate e-mail address, pager (both numeric and alphanumeric), and text messaging number information. "The information will only be used in the event of an emergency," assures Robb. "You may opt out of providing personal contact information, but we can still contact you at your official University business line and e-mail address." If you change your mind about opting out, you can always enter information later. "Obviously, the more contact data we have, the better able we are to get the word out rapidly."

SSN Remediation and the Alumni system (ADVANCE) (8/13/2007)
The first phase of the Social Security Number Remediation Project is scheduled
for go-live on Monday, August 13th. This means that SSNs will be removed from
the Alumni system (ADVANCE) and from the SSO system. All occurrences of SSNs
within these systems will be replaced with an alternate ID, which is a randomly
assigned nine digit number with no intrinsic value. The true SSNs will be stored
in an electronic vault managed by the University's Division of Information
Technology in Columbia.
We do not expect any disruption in the services provided by ADVANCE and the SSO
system as a result of the go-live; however if local issues arise please call the
UMKC IS Call Center
at 816.235.2000, or visit us at 4825 Troost, Suite 102.
Podcasting / Coursecasting Pilot (6/26/2007)
For the winter/spring semesters of 2008, UMKC will be continuing its pilot of two technology solutions with podcasting capabilities, Tegrity Campus 2.0 and Wimba Voice Tools. Both
solutions will be fully integrated with Blackboard.
The sign-up date for the Tegrity Podcasting/Coursecasting Spring 2008 pilot has passed, however last-minute spots may still become available. If you are interested in being part of the pilot but haven't already submitted a pilot request form, please contact Vishal Kurup at
kurupv@umkc.edu.
Podcasting is a relatively new technology that continues to grow in popularity
in educational settings. Being able to review recorded lectures and other course
materials provides students with the ability to work at their own pace. It
extends classroom boundaries and offers students more flexibility to juggle
competing interests and tasks. Podcasting provides faculty with new resources
and ways to design and enhance course curriculum.
