Obtaining UMKC Funded Wireless Phone
Click on the links below for wireless information according to vendor. Rates and phones change all the time and the links allow the information to always be current.

You must first choose the carrier (Verizon, Cingular, Sprint PCS, Nextel, or T-Mobile). Some carriers may have towers that provide better coverage in places you frequent. Our department keeps some loaner phones from some of the carriers to test for coverage in the Kansas City area (as well as national and international coverage). Please call us at 816-235-2663 if you want to borrow a phone for a day to test the coverage. If you will be borrowing the phone for more than a day the loaner cost is $10 per week, with low minute usage (and additional cost for long distance and roaming.) If you require more minutes per month, you will need to pay the monthly fee for the loaner. Loaner phones are generally available for no longer than one month.

T-Mobile and Nextel are digital only phones, so roaming (or being able to use the phone in extreme rural areas) may not be possible with these two carriers. Nextel phones also have two-way radio capability (good if you have more than one Nextel phone). The Nextel I2000 Plus also can be used internationally.

All carriers have rate plans that provide included long distance nationwide (within the carrier's networks and with nationwide calling plans), Verizon and Cingular also have no roaming nationwide (with their nationwide plans).

Most of the carriers provide some sort of equipment discount.

When clicking on the links below you may need to enter our zip code: 64110.

To order, please send a Service Order to Telecommunications. If you have any questions, please call 235-2663.
