Evaluate your work environment - You have to decide what type of headset top you want.
All headsets are either noise canceling or non-noise canceling. If you work in a
multi-person office with lots of background noise, your best choice will be a
noise-canceling model. This blocks out background sounds and amplifies your voice, making
it easier for the caller to hear you. On the other hand, if you work in a quiet office,
a regular headset will work fine.
Decide if you need a monaural or binaural headset -
In addition to answering the phone, do you also have to converse, in person, with others in
your office, or do you have frequent walk-in traffic to your area? If so, you may want to
purchase a monaural headset. This leaves one ear uncovered so you can more clearly hear
conversations around you. A binaural headset allows you to hear the caller in both ears, so
you can block out most background noise, and by design, you will not be able to hear sound
around you as clearly.
Buy a headset that is comfortable - The Supra and Encore are headband styles with plastic receivers, covered by foam, that sit
on your ear(s). All headsets available to purchase are fairly lightweight, but the headband
will be the heaviest style. The Mirage has a small plastic hook that goes behind one ear
and a plastic receiver that sits right outside your ear. It is very lightweight, but
sometimes people do not feel it gives as secure a fit as the headband style headset.
We stock and recommend Plantronics headsets. They have been tested and evaluated in our campus environement.
Our main vendor for headsets is SKC Communication Products, Inc. You can visit their website at
www.skccom.com. Click on Plantronics Headsets-->Products & Services.
If you would like to order, please send Networking & Telecommunications a Service Order. If you have questions, please call our Office Specialist at 816-235-2663.
The different headsets that we stock are shown below. For our environment, headsets will need to be H-series and most will require a M12 Headset Adapter.
Other headsets can be ordered if you see something you like.
MIRAGE Headset Top
The Mirage headset top hooks over the ear. The Mirage works well for non-noisy office environments and for those who do not
mind the feeling of the ear hook.
