Remote Desktop → Mac OS X Instructions

The following page(s) contain instructions on using Remote Desktop to connect to Faculty & Staff Windows computers on the UMKC campus (from off-campus).

Attention: Your campus computer must be powered on and you must also have rights to access your computer remotely. You must also follow these steps (one time only) to ensure your campus computer is ready to accept Remote Desktop connections. If you need assistance, please contact the IS Call Center or your IT Liaison.

Mac OS X Remote Desktop Connection Instructions

Please note: To connect to your campus Windows PC from a Mac you will need to use the Microsoft Remote Desktop application for Mac. Anyone wanting to use Remote Desktop from off-campus should no longer connect via VPN, but should rather configure their Remote Desktop client to use UMKC's Terminal Services Gateway.
  1. Open the Microsoft Remote Desktop application
  2. Click New
  3. For Connection Name, enter UMKC
  4. For PC Name, enter the name of the remote computer to connect to. If you are unable to determine the name of your campus (office) computer, contact the IS Call Center or your IT Liaison
  5. Click on no gateway configured
  6. Select Add Gateway from the dropdown
  7. Click +
  8. For Gateway Name, enter UMKC
  9. For Server, enter tsg.umkc.edu
  10. Close the popup using the red circle in the upper left corner of the window
  11. Click on no gateway configured
  12. Select UMKC from the dropdown
  13. For User Name, type ‘umkc-users\’ followed by your SSO username (e.g.umkc-users\doej)
  14. Optional: If you choose to store your password, it is strongly recommended that you password protect your device. In the space next to Password, type your SSO Password. Note: you will need to update your Remote Desktop settings every time you change your SSO password.
  15. Close the popup using the red circle in the upper left corner of the window
  16. To open the remote desktop session, double click on UMKC
  17. If you are asked to verify the remote computer certificate:
    1. Click Show Certificate
    2. Check the box to "Always trust..."
    3. Click Continue
  18. If you did not store your password (step 14), you will be prompted to enter your password two times
If you have not recently connected to this computer there will be a delay as your profile is created. This is normal.

You are now connected!
