Macintosh Support - Email and Network Shares

You can use a Macintosh to access your university email and certain other network resources. Instructions below assume your Macintosh already has a working Internet connection. For help connecting to the Internet from off campus, please contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Email

The easiest way to access your UMKC email on a Macintosh is Outlook Web Access (OWA), which requires only a web browser such as Safari or Firefox. Alternately, Microsoft Outlook 2011 is UMKC's officially supported Macintosh email client, and is recommended for users who need advanced features such as Public Folder support, calendar and message sharing, and delegate access. Other mail clients such as older versions of Outlook, Entourage, Apple Mail (built-in to OS X), and Eudora are not supported.

Outlook Web Access - This is by far the easiest way to check email on a Macintosh. Open a web browser (we recommend Safari or Firefox) and go to www.umkc.edu/exchange.

Outlook 2011  - Outlook 2011 is an email program specifically designed to interoperate with Microsoft's Exchange email server. As Exchange has become the UM standard for email, Outlook 2011 provides the best option for Exchange functionality and features on the Macintosh. Outlook 2011 is included in Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, which is available at no charge for any University owned computer.  Copies for personally owned computers may be purchased through the University Bookstore.  UMKC offers detailed instructions on setting up Outlook 2011 on campus or at home.

Entourage 2008  - Entourage 2008 supports all Exchange functionality and features on the Macintosh. Entourage has been replaced by Outlook and users of Entourage should have very little trouble adapting to Outlook. Entourage is included with Microsoft Office for Mac 2008, which is available at no charge for any University owned computer.  Copies for personally owned computers may be purchased through the University Bookstore.  For instructions on configuring Microsoft Entourage 2008 or Microsoft Entourage 2004, Click Here.

Apple Mail - Apple Mail is the email client bundled with OS X. It does not provide full Exchange support, and lacks important functionality offered by the options above. Because of these limitations, support for Apple Mail is limited to the setup instructions provided here.  UMKC can offer no guarantee of user experience or reliability when using Apple Mail.

Network Shares

You can also access various UMKC network shares, including your personal profile space (the "Q: drive") and your personal web share. Right now the only supported way to do this on a Mac is via FTP. If you are off campus, you should create a VPN connection to UMKC's network, but keep in mind that FTP is still considered an un-secure protocol, and it is theoretically possible for your password and any data you transfer to be intercepted by a third party.

Personal Profile Space (the "Q drive")

  1. If you are off campus, create a VPN connection to the campus network.
  2. Open the "Connect to Server" app by pressing Command + K, or navigating to the Finder menu, and selecting the "Connect to Server.." option under the Go menu.
  3. Once you have your Connect to Server box open, enter the information below as it corresponds with your username.

For last names starting with A-J, type: smb://kc-csrv-home1.kc.umkc.edu/home$/<first letter of last name>/<username>

For last names starting with K-Z, type: smb://kc-csrv-home2.kc.umkc.edu/home$/<first letter of last name>/<username>

In the case of John Doe, you would type:  smb://kc-csrv-home1.kc.umkc.edu/home-D$/doej

  4. You will be prompted for your username and password, and after you have entered them and clicked "OK" your personal network storage data will be displayed.
