SPSS 19.0 for Windows

Data Analysis with Comprehensive Statistics Software

With SPSS software you can address your predictive analytic needs, whether they require reporting, statistics, data mining, text analysis, Web analytics, survey analysis, decision optimization, or a combination of these capabilities.  The integrated technology suite is designed to expand as your predictive needs grow.  Unlike an isolated analytics tool with limited applicability or an elementary analytics component that meets only a fraction of your objectives, SPSS technology is robust and expandable.  For more information on the capabilities of the product, go to SPSS.

Our SPSS licensing also includes rights to use Amos - a general approach to the style of data analysis known as structural modeling, analysis of covariance structures, or causal modeling.

How To Get a Copy of SPSS

Currently employed faculty and staff members:  Faculty and staff may use SPSS on university owned computers either on campus or at home.  All users must agree to the SPSS License Agreement and become registered users before installing the software suite.  Once registered, users will automatically receive information concerning license renewals and product changes.

Remote installation is the preferred distribution method for all computers managed by Information Services or IT Liaisons.  If a remote installation is not possible, the software is available via a secured UMKC LAN connection.  The SPSS manuals are available on the secured network drive along with the install files.

Faculty or staff wishing to use SPSS on personally owned computers may take advantage of educational pricing to purchase a copy for their individual use.  Orders can be placed directly through SPSS.

Students: Students can use the software within on-campus student computing labs, or through the Remote Labs. They may also purchase either SPSS Student Version or SPSS Graduate Pack.   The Student Version allows up to 50 variables and 1,500 cases.  The Graduate Pack includes a full version of SPSS Base (with no case or variable limits), SPSS Advanced ModelsTM, SPSS Regression ModelsTM, and AmosTM software for structural equation modeling.  Both versions have a four-year license code and are for student home use only.

The SPSS Student Version (ISBN: 0-321-67537-1) is sold and supported exclusively by Prentice-Hall.  Many university and college bookstores stock this software for around $100.  The Grad Pack sells for about $200.  Either version is available online through SPSS.

How To Install SPSS

The preferred method for obtaining a copy of SPSS is to contact the Call Center or your IT Liaison and request a remote installation.  When a computer name is provided, this software can be installed immediately or at a time of the user's choosing.

If a manual install is necessary, first become a registered SPSS user as outlined above.  As part of the SPSS installation procedure, the product must be authorized.  Version 19 installation instructions include the Authorization Code required.

The remote installation will remove previous versions of SPSS before installing the current version.  It is recommended for manual installs that older versions be removed before installing 19, but it is not required.  Both versions can run side by side as long as the new version is installed in a separate directory.

The hardware and software requirements for SPSS 19 are:

  • Microsoft Windows XP (Professional, 32 bit) or Vista (32 or 64 bit), Windows 7 (32 or 64 bit)
  • Intel or AMD x86 processor running at 1GHz or higher
  • 800MB free hard drive space minimum
  • 1G RAM or more recommended
  • SVGA monitor (800x600) or higher-resolution monitor
  • Web Browser: Internet Explorer 7 or higher

If you are running a 32 bit operating system, you must run 32 bit SPSS 19.  If you are running a 64 bit operating system, you can run either the 32 bit or the 64 bit version of SPSS 19.  Users of 64 bit SPSS should be aware that there are known issues that make it difficult to directly import data from 32 bit Excel files into 64 bit SPSS.

How to Renew Your SPSS License

Each year around June 1 the licenses for both SPSS and Amos expire.  You will need to enter a new code to process the license renewal for a previously installed copy.

Version 19

Version 18

NOTE:  Support for versions of SPSS prior to 18 is no longer available.
