VPN for Android

Android devices have a built-in Virtual Private Network (VPN) client that allows you to establish a secure connection to UMKC's local area network. 

Detailed Android VPN Instructions

Android 3.0
  1. Tap Apps in the top right hand corner
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & Networks
  4. Tap VPN Settings
  5. Tap Add VPN
  6. Tap Add PPTP VPN
  7. Tap VPN Name
  8. Enter UMKC
  9. Tap OK
  10. Tap Set VPN Server
  11. Enter vpn.umkc.edu
  12. Tap OK
  13. Check the box next to Enable Encryption
  14. Tap the Menu key in the top right hand corner
  15. Tap Save
  16. Tap UMKC
  17. Enter your SSO username and password
  18. Tap Connect
  19. Once connected, the key icon labeled 'UMKC VPN Connected' will be displayed in your notification area
  20. To end the connection, Tap the Key Icon in your notification area
  21. Tap “UMKC VPN Connection
  22. Tap "UMKC"
  23. You will now be disconnected from the UMKC VPN.

Android 2.2 & 2.3
  1. From the Home screen, open All Apps
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & Networks
  4. Tap VPN Settings
  5. Tap Add VPN
  6. Tap Add PPTP VPN
  7. Tap VPN Name
  8. Enter UMKC
  9. Tap OK
  10. Tap Set VPN Server
  11. Enter vpn.umkc.edu
  12. Tap OK
  13. Check the box next to Enable Encryption
  14. Tap the Back key
  15. Tap UMKC
  16. Enter your SSO username and password
  17. Tap Connect
  18. Once connected, the status 'Connected' will be displayed below UMKC
  19. When you no longer need the VPN connection, return to the VPN Settings menu and tap UMKC
Android 2.1
  1. From the Home screen, open All Apps
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless & Networks
  4. Tap VPN Settings
  5. Tap Add VPN
  6. Tap Add PPTP VPN
  7. Tap VPN Name
  8. Enter UMKC
  9. Tap OK
  10. Tap Set VPN Server
  11. Enter vpn.umkc.edu
  12. Tap OK
  13. Tap the Back key
  14. Tap UMKC
  15. Enter your SSO username and password
  16. Tap Connect
  17. Once connected, the status 'Connected' will be displayed below UMKC
  18. When you no longer need the VPN connection, return to the VPN Settings menu and tap UMKC
Android 1.6
  1. From the Home screen, open All Apps
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Wireless Controls
  4. Tap VPN Settings
  5. Tap Add VPN
  6. Tap Add PPTP VPN
  7. Tap VPN Name
  8. Enter UMKC
  9. Tap OK
  10. Tap Set VPN Server
  11. Enter vpn.umkc.edu
  12. Tap OK
  13. Uncheck the box next to Disable Encryption
  14. Tap the Back key
  15. Tap and hold UMKC
  16. Tap Connect to Network
  17. Enter your SSO username and password
  18. Tap Connect
  19. Once connected, the status 'Connected' will be displayed below UMKC
  20. When you no longer need the VPN connection, return to the VPN Settings menu and tap UMKC

A VPN connects your device to the UMKC network. This means it is visible to the world as part of the UMKC network which exposes it to the same threats as any device on the campus. These may include attempts to gain unauthorized access to your machine. Your device's vulnerability is determined by the security settings, policies and behaviors you employ in the use and management of the device. It is your responsibility to protect your device from unauthorized access.
