VPN for Linux

Detailed Linux VPN Instructions

Please note: These instructions were written using specific Linux builds. If you are using a different distribution of Linux the dialog boxes will vary, but the procedure will be similar.


Ubuntu 11.04
  1. To begin, you need to install the pptp vpn plug-in. Type the following command in a terminal window:
    "sudo apt-get install network-manager-pptp"
    Once the installation is complete you may close the terminal window and complete the following steps.
  2. Click on the Power Icon in the upper right corner
  3. Go to System Settings > Internet and Network > Network Connections.
  4. Click the Add button on the VPN tab to create a new connection.
  5. A dialogue appears asking which type of connection to create; choose Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) from the selection menu.
  6. Click Create
  7. The connection editor will open.
  8. Type "UMKC VPN" in the Connection name field
  9. Type "vpn.umkc.edu" in the Gateway field.
  10. Type your UMKC SSO Username in the User Name field.
  11. Type "umkc-users" in the NT Domain field.
  12. Click Advanced.
  13. Check the option for Use Point-to-Point Encryption and click OK.
  14. Click the Save button to save your new connection.
  15. Click Close to close the Network Connections box.
  16. To connect, click on the Connections icon in the upper right corner.
  17. Click VPN Connections > UMKC VPN
  18. Enter your SSO Password and click OK.
  19. You are now connected!
Fedora 15
  1. Click on your username in the upper right corner
  2. Click System Settings > Network
  3. Click the + symbol
  4. Select VPN interface
  5. Click Create
  6. The connection editor will open.
  7. Type "UMKC VPN" in the Connection name field
  8. Type "vpn.umkc.edu" in the Gateway field.
  9. Type your UMKC SSO Username in the User Name field.
  10. Type "umkc-users" in the NT Domain field.
  11. Click Advanced.
  12. Check the option for Use Point-to-Point Encryption and click OK.
  13. Click the Save button to save your new connection.
  14. Click on UMKC VPN in the left menu
  15. On the right side of the window, move the slider to the ON position
  16. Enter your SSO password and click OK
  17. Once successful, the status in the middle of the window will display 'connected'

Terms of Use

A VPN connects your device to the UMKC network. This means it is visible to the world as part of the UMKC network which exposes it to the same threats as any device on the campus. These may include attempts to gain unauthorized access to your machine. Your device's vulnerability is determined by the security settings, policies and behaviors you employ in the use and management of the device. It is your responsibility to protect your device from unauthorized access.
