All eligible student email accounts have been converted to Outlook Live!

What is Outlook Live?

Outlook Live is an email client that has the familiarity of Outlook and is an integral part of the Microsoft Windows Live suite of services.

Will faculty or staff be converted to Outlook Live?
No - only student email accounts will be converted to Outlook Live. UMKC will continue to use Exchange for faculty and staff email. If you are a student, but your primary role at UMKC is that of a faculty or staff member, you will not get an Outlook Live account at this time.

Why is the University partnering with Microsoft?
Outlook Live gives students a 10 GB mailbox (100 times larger than current student mailboxes). In addition, students have 25 GB of secure online storage, integration with the University's Global Address List, calendaring, and many other services. Students will benefit from the increased mailbox and other services. The University will save significant money on student email licenses and the servers and disk space required to support student email.

What will my student's email address be?
Student email addresses will be username@mail.umkc.edu. The email address will also serve as their Windows Live ID, which will be used to access Outlook Live (via http://www.umkc.edu/is/webmail) and other Windows Live services.

Will my distribution list still work?
Yes. Distribution lists built from class lists in Pathway or via the addresses listed in the Global Address List will work as they do today.

What about my Listserv?
If a student is subscribed to any UMKC List, it will stop delivering emails to their new username@mail.umkc.edu address. Students can go here to get information on how to update their listserv email address.

Will mail sent to username@umkc.edu bounce?
No. Mail sent to any student using the username@umkc.edu will continue to be delivered to the new Outlook Live account.

How does the new email system affect the campus' guarantee of mail delivery?
Information Services continues to guarantee that mail will clear the Exchange architecture and be directed to Microsoft for delivery.

How is FERPA affected by the switch to Outlook Live?
There is no change to a student's right to assert FERPA or to the information displayed when FERPA is asserted.

Will my students be able to reach me?
Yes. The directory information available to students via Outlook Live will contain all student, faculty, and staff information (pending FERPA assertion). In addition, the Exchange Global Address List will reflect all student information (pending FERPA assertion).

How do my students get help?
There are articles in the IT KnowledgeBase which provide specific instructions. Students are always welcome to contact the Call Center at (816)235-2000.
