More Help

As of May 20th, 2014, currently enrolled UMKC students will be able to download, install, and use Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus applications on desktop and laptop computers, free of charge, as part of the Microsoft Student Advantage program. These applications are the same versions as boxed software available for purchase in stores.

Some important items to note:

  • Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus is only available to currently enrolled students with Office 365 email accounts. Employees are not eligible for this program, but can instead take advantage of the Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP).

  • The Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus software available to students may be installed on up to five devices (desktop and laptop computers only) simultaneously. Mobile devices do not count against this limit.

  • Once a student is no longer enrolled at UMKC, the free license to use the Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus software ends, and students will have to purchase a software license from Microsoft or a retailer for continued use. Former students can continue to use their Office 365 email accounts indefinitely, provided they log into the account once every 6 months.

What software is available for download?

As an enrolled student, you will be able to download the following Microsoft Office applications to your desktop and laptop computers free of charge, on Windows systems:

Note: the Lync service is not available to our student O365 accounts.

These titles are available in Office 2013 versions, as well as Office 2007 and Office 2010 versions, depending upon your hardware and software limitations.

For Macintosh users, Office 365 ProPlus includes Word 2011, Excel 2011, PowerPoint 2011, and Outlook 2011.

Where can I download Office 365 ProPlus?

The software is available for download from within your UMKC O365 student email account.

  1. Log into your student email account at http://mail.umkc.edu.

  2. Click the Settings gear icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, next to your name, then click Office 365 settings:

  3. Click software from the list on the left side of the window:

  4. You will be taken to the Office installation section.

  5. If you don't have any version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer, click the install button below the list of Office 365 ProPlus products (there will be fewer programs available for Macintosh users) to download the installation package:

If you have a version of Microsoft Office installed on your computer, click desktop setup in the list on the left side of the window:

Then click the set up button to download the installation package:

  6. The installation package will download to your computer. Locate it, run the program, and continue with your installation. After you run the installer, you will need to accept the license terms, and enter your UMKC student email credentials to continue with the installation.

  7. You can download and install the software on up to five laptop and desktop computers. You can deactivate specific computers from the Office software settings screen within your student email account (the same screen where you initiate software download and installation).

Can I use Microsoft Office 365 apps on my mobile devices to access these applications?

Yes, but only to create documents. You will need a personal Microsoft OneDrive account (set up through Microsoft at www.onedrive.com and not affiliated with your university account) in order to save and access the documents you create.

For iPhones and Android devices, you can install the Microsoft Office Mobile app to create Office documents (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint):

  1. Go to either the App Store (iPhone) or the Play Store (Android) and download the free Microsoft Office Mobile app

  2. Once installed and launched, tap the Get Started button

  3. Enter your full university email address (yourSSO@mail.umkc.edu)

  4. Choose Organizational Account

  5. Log into your UMKC Microsoft O365 email account with your university email address and password

  6. Office Mobile will configure on your mobile device

Again, in order to save and access the documents you create in Office Mobile, you must have a personal OneDrive account through Microsoft. Visit www.onedrive.com for more information.

For the iPad (iPad 2 and newer), you can download individual applications - Word, Excel, and PowerPoint - from the App Store. When you launch the individual apps, you can Activate them using your university Microsoft O365 email account. Documents created on the iPad can be saved to the iPad. To get them off of the iPad onto other devices, you can click the Share icon in the upper-right corner of an open document and send the file as an attachment to an email address.

When do I get access to download the Office 365 ProPlus software as a student?

Once you have enrolled in courses, automated scripts will enable your Office 365 ProPlus license. This may take up to 24 hours after enrollment.

When you graduate or are no longer eligible to enroll in courses, the license will be deactivated. You will still be able to use your account for email, but your Office 365 ProPlus license will expire and the Microsoft Office applications will become unusable. It may take up to 30 days for the software to deactivate. At that time, the software should prompt you to purchase a personal license for continued use.

How do I track where I've downloaded the Office 365 ProPlus software? How to I remove inactive clients from the list?

You can install the Office 365 ProPlus software on up to five devices (desktop and laptop computers; mobile devices don't count against this limit). To install on a sixth device, you have to remove one of your older activations. This won't remove the software, but it will disable the software on that device and free up a slot for your new activation.

To track your downloads, do the following:

  1. Log into your student email account at http://mail.umkc.edu.

  2. Click the Settings gear icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, next to your name, then click Office 365 settings:

  3. Click software from the list on the left side of the window:

  4. You will be taken to the Office installation section. Your downloads will be listed towards the top of the page:

To remove inactive clients from your list, click deactivate next to the computer you want to remove. That will free up a slot to register a new computer.

What if I transfer from one UM campus to another after I've started using Office 365 ProPlus?

Your Microsoft account and licenses don't change as long as you are with the University, enrolled in classes at one of the UM System schools. However, your login username will change to reflect your new campus.

The Office 365 ProPlus software will require that you log into it again, using your new campus email address. For example, if you were at MU with the address abc123@mail.missouri.edu, and transfer to UMKC, your email address changes to abc123@mail.umkc.edu.

Note that some students apply to multiple UM campuses. The first campus to admit the student creates an account in that domain. In that sense, a "transfer" may necessary, even if the student never attended the original school.
