Tuition and Fees for Students on visas other than F-1 and J-1
International students will never be eligible for Missouri Resident status.
Please do not apply for Missouri Residency Status, because holders of the visa types below are not eligible.
A-1 A-2 E-1 E-2 G-1, 2, 3 or 4 H-1 H-4 I J-2
|
K-1 K-2 L-1 L-2 O-1, 2 or 3 P-1, 2 or 3 R-1 R-2 TN TD
|
UMKC international students on one of the above visas may pay Missouri Resident Tuition and Fees in particular circumstances.
- IF you are in one of the visa categories listed above
- and IF one of the following options is relevant t your situation,
you may qualify to pay Missouri Resident Tuition/Fees during your studies at UMKC.
Please read these options carefully to ensure that your situation matches the information given.
Option 1: Part-time Study
(This does not pertain to F-1 and J-1 students. F-1 and J-1 students cannot use this option.)
Students in the visa types listed above may enroll part-time at UMKC and will be automatically charged Missouri Resident Tuition/Fees during their part-time study.
A part-time student may enroll in up to:
- 3 credit hours or less during Summer Semester
- 6 credit hours or less during Fall Semester
- 6 credit hours or less during Spring Semester
Students who enroll in more than 3 credit hours during the Summer Semester or more than 6 credit hours during the Fall or Spring Semesters will be responsible for paying non-resident tuition fees for all hours enrolled if they do not qualify for paying the resident tuition / fees as described in Option 2.
- J-1 Research Scholars and professors enrolled part time may also qualify for option 1; J-1 students cannot.
- Students on A, L, or G visas generally pay out of state tuition and fees. They may petition for a change of residency status per Missouri Department of Education regulations which state "Aliens present within Missouri as representatives of a foreign government or at the convenience of the United States or Missouri governments and holding G visas shall be entitled to resident status, except those who are government-funded students. Aliens and their dependents holding A or L visas may be granted resident status if determined to be individually designated as representatives of their governments and whose education is not government-funded."
Option 2: Qualify for the Missouri Tax Scholarship
If you are in the USA on a visa type listed above and your spouse/parent worked in the state of Missouri during the entire preceding tax year and have a Missouri income tax liability, you might qualify for the Missouri Tax Scholarship.
You should submit your own or your spouse/parent’s Missouri Individual Tax Return Form from the preceding tax year and the Missouri Tax Scholarship Application Form to the Cashiers Office to be considered for the scholarship. The scholarship amount applied to a student account will reflect the amount of the tax liability up to the non-resident fees charged. It will not exceed the tax liability for the academic year. Please contact the Cashiers Office if you have questions.
You may only qualify to pay resident tuition each year of your studies as long as your Missouri Tax Scholarship Application Form continues to reflect Missouri income tax liability for the entire preceding tax year.
Download the Missouri Tax Scholarship form here.
Submit this application with the Missouri tax documents to the UMKC Cashiers office in the Administrative Center.
If you have additional questions about your UMKC tuition and fees, please contact the Cashiers Office at phone: 816-235-1365 or by email: cashiers@umkc.edu.
