Optional afternoon walking tour of historic buildings at the Fort
Directions on reverse
DIRECTIONS: Take the Kansas Turnpike (Interstate 70), K-10, or State Ave. (US-24 & 40) to K-7. If you take the Turnpike the exit is labeled Bonner Springs/Leavenworth; from Kansas City go to the right of the toll plaza to avoid the toll and exit. If you take K-10, the K-7 north exit is labeled Bonner Springs. If you take State Ave. the exit is for US-73/K-7 north and is labeled Leavenworth. Follow US-73/K-7 north about 15 miles from the Turnpike or about 14 miles from State Ave. North of downtown Leavenworth, US-73/K-7 (4th St.) turns left at Metropolitan (a "T" intersection). Turn left on Metropolitan, but then right at the first light. You are now on Fort Leavenworth.
If you are coming from the northern part of Kansas City or cities to the north, take Interstate 29 (north from Kansas City) to the Rt. 92 exit for Platte City. Follow Rt. 92 through Platte City and across the Platte River. Rt. 92 then turns left at a "T" shaped intersection, clearly marked for Leavenworth. Stay on that road until you cross the Missouri River. Turn right at the second light after the bridge. You are now on Fort Leavenworth.
Once at the Fort, go through two lights, then a hundred yards or so to Sedgwick Ave. and turn right. Go one block and turn right into a large and probably crowded lot overlooked by two large, new three-story buildings (actually the two wings of Eisenhower Hall). Park in any space not labeled "X." Walk between the two buildings and follow the sign. Dupuy Auditorium is in the north, or left, wing; the Combined Arms Research Library is in the south, or right, wing.
Audio players for a self-guided tour of historic buildings at Fort Leavenworth are available at the main gate. Those wishing to tour as a group will meet outside the Frontier Army Museum (100 Reynolds Ave., at Gibbon Ave.) at 2:30. Lunch is on your own; maps showing nearby restaurants are available.
