FALL 2008 NON-CREDIT COURSES

We are developing a non-credit labor certificate. The courses offered as part of our certificate program over the Interactive Video Network can be taken not-for-credit at half the price of regular tuition.

American Labor History

Instructors: Judy Ancel, UMKC and Bob Ubriaco, UMSL

This course will survey the history of working people and their organizations from the settlement of America to the present. We will concentrate in particular oTo register as continuing education student, call (816) 235-2736 or 816-235-1588 for PACE degree students. Fees are $865.33 for one course, $1,697.93 for two. Graduate fees are $1,024.63 for one course and $2,016.53 for two. Non-credit is half of undergraduate rate.

n the 20th century – an era of heroic struggles and tremendous transformations. By analyzing the strategies, successes, and obstacles faced by workers in the past, we can deepen our sense of the possible and be able to understand today's workplace and labor movement in historical context.

Labor Law

In this course, participants will examine the role of government in the regulation of labor-management relations in the United States. While the focus of the course will be on federal laws regulating private sector labor relations, parallel issues addressed in the Railway Labor Act and state public sector labor relations law will also be covered. Specific topics include the legal framework for the organization of workers, definition of prohibited or unfair labor practices of employers and unions, legal regulation of the collective bargaining process, regulation of the use of economic weapons in labor disputes, enforcement of collective bargaining agreements and the regulation of internal trade union activities.
