FactsHand Outs

The UMKC Safe Space program provides an avenue through which all people can actively show their support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

The UMKC Safe Space program was formed to reflect the University's Diversity Statement of creating and encouraging a campus culture that is safe, secure, diverse, and accepting for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

The program offers a solid curriculum where a qualified facilitator and a diverse panel of trainers will visit to discuss awareness about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues.

After completing the initial 2 hour training session, participants receive a Safe Space sticker or placard indicating that their work place or living space welcomes LGBT individuals. Individual members form part of a visible network of resources and support for LGBT people and their allies.

After completing initial training, Safe Space members may attend a more comprehensive workshop in order to become qualified as a Safe Space trainer or facilitator. To schedule a Safe Space training session for your organization or department, please call UMKC LGBT Programs and Services at 816 235-1639.
