In 1933, Kansas City leaders embraced the belief that their city could never achieve greatness without a great university. In the heart of the Great Depression, they dug deep and started a university that to this day is deeply engaged in making Kansas City a great place to live, work and learn. That's UMKC's legacy - UMKC is Kansas City's university. Our Strategic Marketing and Communications staff embraces that mission. We believe that UMKC's academic excellence, impact on the lives of students, deep community engagement, research and tradition of service - are stories that simply can't be told enough.
Our award-winning team of writers, designers, editors, marketers and web developers work collaboratively with the campus and community to spread the word about UMKC. Our full-service support agency strategically plans and delivers communications, marketing and advertising support. We work to build the overall brand of the university but also help individual academic units develop distinct brand identities that connect with - and boost - UMKC's overall brand. Our goal is simple: Make sure that everyone knows the treasure they have in their midst. UMKC - Kansas City's university.
In addition to a full service agency serving the marketing and communications needs of UMKC, the division of Strategic Marketing and Communications also includes KCUR-FM 89.3, one of the country's leading National Public Radio affiliates.
KCUR-FM 89.3 is home to diverse local programming, providing high-quality news, information and entertainment in a non-commercial format. The station has garnered prestigious awards for its reporting, program production and arts and culture coverage. For more information, visit www.kcur.org.
The excellence of our staff wins recognition from peers. In 2012, our talented team brought home 12 prestigious CASE awards - including six coveted gold medals - from the competition for academic publication. Judges at the District VI annual meeting of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education recognized the "Border Schmorder" and 2012 Summer Session advertising campaigns. Also winning gold were the 2012 Homecoming tabloid, the Conservatory Academy catalog, the 2012 freshman viewbook and recruiting materials for the International Student Affairs Office.
